Default E-tec vs. 4 Stroke

I have an old 2 stroke on my boat right now and envy the quiet of the 4 stroke. I have heard that the Evinrude E-tec is a very quiet motor, rivaling 4 strokes. I have not heard one myself. Could anyone that owns one or has been on a boat the has one on it, tell me how it compares to a 4 stroke motor in terms of noise? Thanks. -Tim

Noisier than a 4 stroke but very quiet - no problem talking at cruising rpm.

The G2s we re-powered with provided a huge noise reduction compared to the OX66s we had previously. As the previous poster said they are still louder than comparable 4 strokes but not an annoyance at all. The Etecs sort of have a "diesel" tone at and around idle speeds.

I fish a friends 29 Southport w/twin 300 Yamies and damn they are quiet. Might even be quieter than my 150 Etec, at least at idle. Boy do they wake up when opened up.

Have a gen 1 and it's great, quiet, fuel efficient and reliable. Never going back to a 4 stroke or non etec 2 stroke. I've had mine coming up on 10 years with no issues.

I have 2 direct injection 250s (almost an etec mostly ficht) and the 2 of them are more quiet than my single 99 Johnson seahorse 150 I have on my other boat and the etecs are even better with noise.

I had a gen 1 etec on my last boat and loved it, got twin yammies on my new boat and they are great too. Noise level is honestly the same, I would be more concerned with weight comparisons!

Thank you for all for your replies. I am seriously thinking of a 2007 E-tec 200 hp to replace my 1998 Mercury 200 HP 2 stroke. This is really all about reducing noise levels while keeping the weight of the motor about the same.

Is it the the small block or big block 200? I have the small block (2.7) and itís far from quiet when running though I think it would still be a lot quieter than the mercury.
Itís really more about pitch so which motor your are getting will make a difference the 3.3 will be much easier on the ears than the 2.7.
At idle all etecs are pretty quiet but in the end four strokes strokes win the quiet category.

Have a 2013 ETEC. Love it. Quiet reliable and fuel efficient. Compared to similar sized 4 strokes it is louder but not to the point of annoying. I will be repowering again with the ETEC.

Have both Etec 250 08 and suzuki 225 08 four stroke. Both over 1000 hours. Absolutely love both. Etec has a design issue that BRP fixed out of warranty. But aside from that 1000 trouble free hours.

At idle no smoke and quietness gives the suzuki an edge in my book. U have to do an oil change at a 100 hours so if u put 150 on a season itís a need to haul/service the motor where the Etec can stay in just add 2stroke oil...

really depends on the size motor and boat you are putting it on. My pick goes to the best local service department.

if itís noise you seek to reduce. Go suzuki you will be very happy

Addressing your actual question there is not a significant difference at idle/drift. When running cant say if they are necessarily much louder but definitely a different tone.

Boat next to me has run Etecs for 13 years. He said they have been very reliable. This is a guy that runs to the Canyons on a regular basis out of Long Island which is min a 70 mile run.

One thing youíll notice is the etec idle is very low. Itís quiet enough that I often have to check to make sure theyíre on so I donít try to start a running engine. Not sure if you troll, but the low idle is really nice for that. I use about .5 GPH trolling and almost no oil on a small block 200. No issues with fowling or anything at low speed either, I often troll for hours at a time. They seem pretty quiet at all ranges to me, but have a deeper sound than the 4 stroke Yamaha I had before. Hard to say if one was louder than the other while cruising, but the etec is quieter at idle.
