Default Baby humpback in Boston Harbor!

Anyone else see the whale today?! Around 2pm the VHF calls started coming through. Actually the Codzilla boat and Cetacea were talking about it and then they switched to a private channel. Then other boats on channel 9 were chattering about it. Anyway it was near the dredging barge and Deer Island by the time I got there (maybe 2:15pm).

Pretty cool. Saw the mist from the blow hole a few times and then saw the back/tail twice over about 20 minutes. The Cetacea (which is actually a whale watching vessel) was there for a while. Easy trip for that charter! A whale right in Boston. Lol.

They initially said it was a minke, then after a while the baby humpback was the consensus. When I was there we probably had about 20 boats there. Crazy!

I saw it around 1:30 around Castle Island near the anchorage and President Roads. It was a two year old according to the chatter from the Aquarium boat. Also heard earlier in the morning there were two in Hull Gut.

I was fishing a pogy school all to myself, about 60 yards from the northwest side of spectacle. Thing came up about 20 feet from my starboard, pogies flying out of its mouth.

I just happened to be looking in that direction saw the whole thing start to finish. I was taking a quick video of him swimming away as I was getting ready to get underway and ensuring he was a safe distance to do so, when the coast guard swooped in to encourage me to move quicker.

It was awesome to see it so close to Spectacle...and to me.

I saw one off of Graves on Saturday and it was raining pogies. 40 ft of water, pretty amazing.

They've been hanging just off the outer harbor islands feasting on pogies for the last week. Had them come right up to me while I was fishing. They sure do toss those pogies in the air!

Which boat did the Coast Guard use? I didn't see them out there that day.

Any idea where the rest of them are hanging out. Thinking about making a run out to Stellwagen on Wednesday. Hoping there up north. Coming from Newburyport and I don’t think my crew can last the whole day running to provintown and back!

BWO: Do you have AIS? If not, then download a free Marine Tracker app and follow a whale watching charter boats location. Cetacea is one of the common names you hear on the VHF.

The humpbacks (3 or 4) have been between off Newburyport since th epogies arrived in early July. Ive seen them up to N. Hampton every time I am out. If its whales you re after look for the pogie schools (or the whale watching boats chasing the whales), The Gloucster boats have been coming up here for the whales.

They were out in full force today all the way inside of spectacle. I was fishing a poggie school and it breached about 50’ away scaring me half to death and swam very close to the boat. I’ve never got my snag hook and live lined poggie in faster thought for sure I was going to hook it and be in a world of trouble. Put on a nice show for folks. There’s a video of it on Boston.com’s front page.

Fishing was excellent too....

That is an AMAZING picture! Wow, and right in my neck of the woods so how come I've never seen this kind of incredible action?! I'm right out of Hawthorne Brewer next door and cut through Marblehead on a regular basis and never seen anything like this, dammit! I'm trying to look for Halfway Rock on the map and can't seem to find it, how far offshore to the lighthouse is it?
