Default Block Island or Nantucket?

Hello,

I have been to Block Island a lot and love it. Next summer we are thinking of changing it up and going to Nantucket.

Rental house and a couple days for a young family and friends. If you have been to both which do you prefer?

Thank you for sharing. I am grateful for your time.

Both are great. Nantucket is much fancier and has better beaches. Much more of a elitist rich scene. Nantucket has much more going on — restaurants, shopping, the museum, theatre. But the high prices and snobbish folk can be a big turnoff. Block is much more down to earth.

Nantucket has a lot more going on. For shear beauty however, my money would be on Block. Two completely different scenes.

Plenty of nice down to earth people on nantucket. Not the place to go if your on food stamps but no one says you have to go out to eat every night either. Block, bring some books, not a ton to do. Both are beautiful islands.

if you love block then you will probably love it more than nantucket. with that said, if you've never gone to nantucket you should definitely go. all the rumors about the cost etc are true but it is still an incredible place. there's a reason so many who could live anywhere in the world choose to spend so much time there.

I have been to both there are much more private beach spots on Nantucket, Block has very few beaches and they are crowded... you can fit 2-3 BI's on 1 Nantucket. Nantucket has a great shuttle system you can explore the whole island from it and it's only a dollar per ride. Go out to scionset for a half day, Madaket has the best beaches and sunsets on the planet. Downtown Block is fun but once you buy your ice cream and walk around for ten minutes your done, Nantucket has a huge harbor front with sightseeing tours that are fun for everyone...the whaling museum has a great walking tour that will show you the long history of the place. Mopeds are not the answer on Ack like BI... You can see all of BI in 2 hours where Ack you can't. Best bet is to rent a jeep which has a beach sticker with it and drive out to smith point for the best sunset of your life. The house rental will be 3x that of BI but if you've already done one why not try another place and see for yourself... BI is less crowded in general and more family oriented where Ack is bigger, same family feel but crowded...BI you will see the whole family grandparents and all but ack is just the mom dad and kids... Try Cisco brewers for happy hour, kids are there, dogs they have a band, great beer and some food carts.. fun for the whole family.

Nantucket is 100% not my scene... I'm not a rich, snotty, elitist.

in other words, my shit stinks.

I've been to both by boat. Funny how two islands that close to each other can be that different but they are. Nantucket definitely caters to the wealthy with prices to reflect it. If I were going by boat it would be Block hands down. Easy to do the whole island by bike and and you can do a lot on foot or by dinghy. But if I had a car, Nantucket would be my choice. This island is much bigger and there's a lot to see. When you're there by boat you either have to rent a car or you'll miss most of it. Block also wins on price. Slips and moorings are much cheaper. And the services available for boaters in Block Island's harbor are tough to beat. Definitely more marinas to choose from and a smaller boat crowd, ie... few mega yachts.

I don't think Thurston Howell has ever been to Nantucket.

I have always found the people in the Nantucket Boat Basin to be very friendly, almost to a fault. There are some gems amongst the summer residents for sure, and if you're dead-set on avoiding obnoxious people, then stay on BI. But as others have pointed out there is a lot to do on ACK and it's not difficult at all to get out of town and away from the crowds.

Or to get along with just about everyone on the island.

Have been to both Places. I would go to MV in a heart beat and was going to recommend you do that instead. It's much more down to earth.

Nantucket is nothing special at all, I don't even get why people go there to waste money (I ended up there for work, expenses paid by company) for the last two years. It would be the very last place I'd ever go on my own dime.

Mv has a ton of natural beauty and amazing spots, many more than Nantucket imho, but people who get off the ferry and spend the day in oak bluffs will never know that. Mv has a much more laid back vibe, but not as good as block. Nantucket in the summer seems like New York east, I just hope it doesn't get as weird as the hamptons someday. Oh and hit cuttyhunk on the way it's cool.

2 night in Cuttyhunk would be awesome.. I was there for 24 hours last summer. Was so cool to see a glimpse into what the past must have been like!

MV has the most natural diversity of the 3 islands but it is 10x's the size of Block. MV's highest point is 311' and some of the vistas encountered along some of the roads and trails are not found on ACK. As orcaII indicated, a person doing a day trip OB will never understand MV.

That said, the town of Nantucket is worth experiencing.

As with all of these islands, peak season is one thing, off season especially Mid September is another.

Who's muffy? It's been dozens of years since I watched the show, but I thought he called her honey, or lovie, or something like that.

As for me, I'm the mary anne kind of guy. Definitely MA over ginger. Not that there was anything wrong with ginger, but ginger to bed, MA to wed......

Oh, and MA would like BI better.

ask 10 people you'll get 11 opinions. this is exactly the reason you absolutely have to go see them all yourself. only opinions you should ignore is the stuff like "Nantucket is nothing special at all...". or any other nonsensical negative replies.

also keep in mind that MV, especially, is extremely diverse (in landscape, people, development, and more) and takes several trips to see and get even begin to get a feel for the different areas of the island. how anyone could not love each of the places in this thread says a lot more about them than the places. they are all amazing in many ways. of course they all have their drawbacks but they're all worth checking out without a doubt.
