Been to both and I find ACK more civilized. Block beaches (Ballard’s) was full of drunk day trippers from Long Island. The restaurants were just average. ACK has great beaches, restaurants, and things to do (museum, brewery & shops)

ACK Boat Basin and staff are just awesome and their location is right at the foot of “downtown “

Just got back from Edgartown and that was beautiful. The houses on the harbor are amazing. The food was great and the harbor and mooring field was peaceful.

I say give ACK a try

Cheers

also keep in mind that MV, especially, is extremely diverse (in landscape, people, development, and more) and takes several trips to see and get even begin to get a feel for the different areas of the island. how anyone could not love each of the places in this thread says a lot more about them than the places. they are all amazing in many ways. of course they all have their drawbacks but they're all worth checking out without a doubt.

Any suggestions on where to stay and where to dock?

Put all 3 on your list if you can.
Three totally different islands, different personalities sort of speak, different things to see.

Block Island..smaller, all things you need to get to are right there easy to get to, nothing is far away. Major party scene.

Marthas...bigger, lots of neat things to see, cool villages, and lots of open expanse, the cliffs too. Great for biking, and most roads...you can see a lot.

Nantucket, mid sized, a lot of roads you can't see as much though. While it has a lot to offer, there's also a sense of...the natives there like to keep things more private and closed off. Gotta go find the beaches there, and they're more low key in a sense. Lots of cranberry bogs!!! One time Jeeping there I had a side view mirror ripped off my Jeep..probably still hanging in that tree!

Put all 3 on your list! Of the islands in this area, Fishers Island is the least you can see as a tourist. They really try to keep the tourists out there.

I wonder if some of the folks commenting in this thread have ever even been to Nantucket. Go to all three and you wont be disappointed in any of them.

Block...especially now that they have instituted a RI residents only policy. Keeps out the riff-raff.

You should go to Ack (sounds like something the cat puked up...)

I used to like Nantucket the best. Beautiful, elegant and spectacular. But the Vineyard has grown on me. The diversity of harbors/towns is really amazing. Edgartown is the closest to Nantucket (physically and spiritually) with elegant old captain's house and a charming town center. Oak Bluffs has the party scene you can find in Block. Vineyard Haven is as close to a "normal everyday" Cape Cod town as the islands have. Tashmoo and Menemsha have an unspoiled natural beauty. The last recommendation is Cuttyhunk Picture a very small New England fishing community circa 1900. They have gone "way to commercial" by adding a few picnic benches on the dock (sarcasm intended).

Block is beautiful and low key..... until it is time to party. I find it has very similar characteristic to each of the islands above... but just "a little less." (one man's opinion...) But the thing I feel most strongly about is to follow the advice given above. Visit them all!!! They each have something special to experience.

I loved Nantucket, then I went to Block Island, the greatest. The crowds on Nantucket are absolutely insane.

Why not Montauk? It's a fun place and a good destination.

I think Nantucket is one of the best places around. Yes, the island has money but that is something that has kept it nice (no fast food, no traffic lights, lots of conservation land, etc..). Town can be a bit elitist, but there are also places on the island that are much more normal. While town is fun for dinner/drinks, the best part of Nantucket is the beaches away from town. To me, it provides a nice mix depending on what you want to do.

When Iím asked about the difference between ACK and MV I put it this way.

ACK- private golf club
MV- Public Course

and now I have to add BI- mini golf at the local fried food place.

I have to say ACK is one of my favorite places.

Thats a little harsh on BI I would say

ACK = Augusta
MV = A ďNormalĒ private coarse
BI = Public coarse located next to a Tiki Bar

Oh and Every golf coarse has stuffy dbags and drunks just some have more than others.

OP where do you live? What kind of boat do you have? Depending on where you live and keep your boat I would do both MV and ACK possibly Cuttyhunk in the way in or out for a night. I did this trip as a kid and still remember it all. Spend more time in MV than ACK although ACK is beautiful and should be seen.

I grew up in Fairfield County CT my dad was in construction and did most of our work in Greenwich and Darien (This is the Mecca of stuck up douches) and last time I was in ACK after three days I could not stand being there anymore itís loaded with Judge Smales wanna bees and everyone wants a huge part of your wallet.

Sure the boat basin people are nice to you r face itís the most expensive marina in the entire east coast and fully booked for the summer. I decide to leave a day early on a Saturday early they said they were going to charge me. I said you canít rent it? Itís in the contract if you can rent it I get my deposit back they said we will see. An hour later i call them on the radio and record them on my phone, hi do you have an opening for the night they say no all booked I say thanks. I call them from a my phone and say so Iím getting a refund they say no I said you just said on the radio your full so can I come back I changed my mind they say forget it we will give it back.

Growing up near Boston and in Hyannis we thought Nantucket was more Boston people and MV more New York. 3 to Sagamore Bridge to Hyannis was Nantucket, 195 to Bourne Bridge to Falmouth was MV, at least that's the way we thought about it, not sure if it was ever really true or not.
