Default Talica 25 or Makaira 20 or ???

Looking to get some new set ups to fish offshore out of Long Island. The set ups will be used for sharks, trolling and chunking bluefins up to 200 lbs and rarely out in the canyon. The two reels that are at the top of my list are the Talica 25 and Makaira 20. Does anyone have any experience with these reels for these applications? Plan would be to spool these reels with a 100 yard top shot of 80lb mono and back the rest of the reel with 100 or 130 lb braid.

Thanks for your input.

Being the owner of several talicas I can say they are one of the best reels I have ever owned.

Agreed. I have all Talica 25’s and fish inside offshore and the canyons. They handle anything but a giant or a big blue marlin. Love them. Crushed a 150 lb big eye 2 weeks ago with ease

I've never used a Makaira but the Talica 25's are very good. The ones I had stood up to some serious abuse and were up to the task. I have switched over to the HX Raptors for that class of reel because I give them a slight edge over the Talica's...

Thanks for the input guys, keep it coming! Never considered an HX Raptor, I’ll have to look into it.

I have a talica 25. Love that reel. Plenty of drag, fast retrieving in high gear, and reliable! Hard to beat that combo.

I actually have both reels, and they are both amazing! The makaira is actually a bigger reel, it's like a narrow 30. I use them both for the same applications, I have 100lb Jerry brown with 80lb top shots on both reels. The talica has about 600 total yards and the makaira has about 700. They are both beasts, the talica is a little lighter. Have fought bluefin and bigeyes on both and have had no problem with fish up to 200lbs. It basically comes down to preference. I absolutely love my makairas, caught a 553lbs thresher last year with a mak 30 open top with 40lbs of drag and we had that fish to the boat in under an hour!

For trolling, MAK20, or better yet check out the new Penn 20VISX which is much smoother and has better drag adjustment than the MAK. For chunking, TAC25. IMHO the TAC25 does't have enough mass to dissipate the heat of a large fish on the troll screaming 300 yds of line at strike. For smaller fish, no problem. Or get TAC50's

Buy American!!
Avet HXW or 30 n
Penn VSX 16-20
I'm not really a fan of the open top reels for trolling.however for jigging I think they are very nice

I'll buy from whomever makes the product I feel is the best for my application regardless of where it comes from. But, I do feel you are right on recommending Avet HXW Raptor, great smoothness, line capacity and drag in small form factor. I prefer the HX Raptors over the Talicas I have had. Have never used the Penn VSX reels so cannot comment there.

I love the makaira. I've owned the 50W, 50, and 30. I looked at the talica too when I bought the first makaira. Both are great top of the line reels but a few guys I know who were using the talicas were getting their lines caught on the harness lugs. The makaira was at an angle where it would slip right back off if the line came over it. Really the only difference we could come up with between the 2. other than price point
