Fished around the BI yesterday. All shorts and plenty of them.

ho1ywars the Proline in my sig line is my active rig. I fish when I can juggle it with work. I do a lot of OT. Haven't logged as much time on on the water this year as the previous two.

Keep the boat at Southwinds.

Started on the south side of BI and drifted pretty much to the Mantoloking bridge. Bunker, squid and jigs...NOT A DAMN THING! Let me tell you though, I could care less. PS I am going on the outside next time :X

I've been trolling between BB and marker 41 and have caught plenty of blues in the 2-3 pound range. I throw them back but it's fun action.
Anyone know where the bigger ones are hiding? I've tried in the deep channel just inside the lighthouse in 40ft of water and have not gotten a bite. I also trolled both sides of the seaside bridge...no luck.
Where else?

Caught a lot of small blues too but nothing bigger than 2 lb; been to Tires twice this year and nothing but dogfish..Same time last year we have caught 10 lb blue inside the bay and lots of Black Sea Bass at tires. Wondering what happened?

I also tried tolling in the 35' to 45' water outside the BI, saw big school of bait fish but no taker. If it continued this way, I would consider moving to Shark River next year.

Most of the area you fished does not hold anything.

Must have taken ALL day to drift that far. I don't have my chart handy but it has to be better than 15 miles.
What were you trying for?
Bunker??? Catching crabs! Unless your drifting live peanuts don't even bother. Possibly around the sod banks or inlet, but not in the bay
Did you try drifting any of the channels like OCC or DC?
Squid/Killie combo on a fluke rig or jigging a spro/gulp combo?
Different methods and areas for your target species.
Learn them all and you can be successful.

We were out from 7am to approx 330pm. Used squid, fluke jigs and minnows. We motored a few parts were the water depth wouldn't allow for drifting, draft is about 3 feet.

If you are looking for small blues, just troll between the BI and BB. All the fish you want, or at least it was that way last weekend. Got enough for 2 shark trips in a few trips out.

Fluke, I heard there were keepers caught by the mouth of oyster creek opening weekend. Tried for a bit Saturday but got into heavy weeds and called it early.

Think we got a few weeks until the Tires start producing, did try out there but only got short sea bass.

Picked up two yesterday. One at 18" and one at 24". Both on a bucktail and Gulp! They would not touch killies or spearing.

The big surge of big blues only lasts for a few weeks each spring. Then they head out and up to Cape Cod. The small 2-3 pounders stay all summer and can usually be found from the 40 to the BI plus the local bridges and inlets. Resident bass are always in 18-24 inchers. Fluke mainly 16-18 inches as well. There are always larger fish around. They are usually caught very early, very late or at night. Live bait works best for the bass, fluke and weaks, blues will hit almost anything small and shiny.

I started this thread last year. I did find some bluefish in the bay a few weeks ago. My BIL and I got a couple each on bunker chunk with a chum streak going under the bridge.
