he was on another show that was more of a miniseries, a precursor to WT. Can't remember the name of it, I'm sure someone else will. You could tell he didn't particularly enjoy the extra company on board.

Other than being a fishing show, the talk about "competition" between the boats is a snipe hunt in my eyes.
the show is a snap shot of the overall tuna season6 weeks usually last year it was 4 weeks fishing was hot. Just wnogh to break up into x amount of episodes usually 70 or so fish caught on film , during that time someone catches more that someone else so you have a winner and a loser. That and 3 bucks will get you a cup off coffee we do the show for the money period. My boat is a commercial boat first thing I asked when they asked me to participate is ill was is there a check involved. When they said yes. I said sign me up. Itís gotten better than I ever imagined. When this next reveal is up we just signed for 5 yr Iím gonna retire and travel around the world in fish on them there fancy sport boat as we have invitions t from around the world to fish myself and the wife who loves fishing are gonna retire and travel. It was never made for guys like us who actually are fortunate enough to got do it. It was made for the 99.9 % of the world who ainít so lucky as all the critics

For real. I like downeast boats and seeing big ass fish come across the deck. Don't care if it's scripted or manufactured drama. If there were any alternative shows with stinky diesel boats and bloody decks I'd probably be a little pickier. As it is, this is the only dog in the fight. The only suggestions I have to improve the show are to add the Molson girls, Anna Kournikova, midgets, or a combination thereof.

Money talks man. Congrats on cashing in for your family. I like fishing and especially catching fish. A show that does just that is alright in my books

Dave , I really wish you would quit smoking. You want to stay on the green side of the grass once you retire. Those smokes dont help.

LOL! I was being sarcastic - WT is the only game in town for a primetime fishing show! Congrats on the contract extension - your retirement plan sounds awesome, and WAY more interesting than tooling around in an RV or playing golf. So many cool places to fish...

See what you can do about hiring the Molson girls as crew though.

Why does the Hard Merch fight the tuna from the side of the boat, while the other boats are always from the back?

Youíve seen the back of the Merch. It has a different design and with the layout on the deck it doesnít look like he has the room to move back there.
Cant imagine backing down with that open stern. Now that I think about it I donít think Iíve ever noticed Dave backing down on a fish.

        - The average price in 2017 was around $6.50lb back to boat. Fact
        - For the most part 95% (even some show guys) everyone in the tuna fleet has primary jobs or other means of funds
        - Some guys on and off the show have money backing them so they can "tuna fish for a living", fish 24/7, post a bunch of fish pictures and it's ok to make $50K for the year off fish.
        - Even the show guys their primary job for the most part is now "the show". They now get paid to fish and anything caught & sold is secondary. They just need footage.
        - There are about 5 boats on the show and thousands of commercial tuna permits. The guys on the show (aside from a couple with dot com being one) aren't even top producers in the overall fleet.

So let's say you fish next to the show boats and are not being paid to be out fishing like they are. You're truly trying to make a living from tuna fishing. You fish a ton, sleep on the boat many nights and do well and catch 30 fish for the season. You run with 1 mate. 30 fish that average 350lb dressed X $6.50 = $68,000. Even if you average $8lb that's $85,000. All before boat payments, taxes, expenses, health insurance etc. Then try dividing that up between 2-3 guys for 4 months of work.

As you can see the math just doesn't work to truly do it as a living with no other means. But you can make a piece of change if you fish a ton and do well. But you'll have to have the tuna season wide open with no time constraints and you'll need to be pretty good. Then you'll need to have some other sources of funds as well. Most have land jobs. Some lobster or do other commercial fishing and jump in to the game when catching tuna makes sense.

Of the 5 boats on the show some are running charters. Some treat the boat as a business. Others don't have to. But they make show money, tuna money, charters etc. Combine it all and looks like they are doing pretty good since the show took off. Good for them. But as I said that is 5 boats out of everyone.

I've seen some of the fish this season they are passing off as $22lb. Blood red nonsense $4-5lb. Those guys jumped on newly arrived fish to get some footage. Can't blame them easy footage.

But as said Nat Geo would be pretty dumb to air real prices, take the glamour out of it and potentially drive down their own ratings.
who has payments on a boat and goes Tuna fishing to make payments ? Answer no one. Anyone whoís got boat payments has got a second job that makes those payment for me both boats are paid for before I Tina fished on day one One was paid for by gollnetting. One pays for by increase in charters from show. Both are fully engaged in the tuna fishery when not chartering its extra money. We are fortunate to be a part of the show. Weather you like it or not. We are the first guys I think inthe history of Tuna fisjing to Make big money because of it. Yes there have been numbers kicked around but at this point are way off. Starts out small but every season is an increase. Abd at 13 seasons itís well good real good we just singed o 5 yr renew. A d Iíll retire from fishing after that. Most of the nicest boats out there abd theres 20 million dollar sport boats and well as a lot of the million dollar down east style are corpse owned boat. Guys with big money get that commercial permit and need that boat to lose lots of money. On paper every year. Very few are owner operated the just need that mega corirate write off.

More power to you Dave. I proudly wear a Angelica fisheries T shirt from Pat at Bionic here in Pompano. I get some compliments on it too from those in the know. If you ever come to S. FL., you are welcome to a family meal and drinks.
