You need to pick your days. In a 21 Ft. Boat try to pick days where your trip will be in winds of 5-10 Kts. Even if it is 10-15 you can make it but it might get uncomfortable. Try to go early in the morning where the wind is likely to be lighter. Also, if you can hit Plum Gut at slack tide or close to slack you will have an easier time.

Planning on leaving Norwalk on out going tide and returning on incoming tide. Will not make trip if weather is not perfect. In no rush to get there if all goes well would hope to get to Greenport in around five hours traveling at about 15-17 knots with tide.

Go to Northport. Right across the Sound and only 16 nm. Nice, quaint little town with a free town dock. You also have Cold Spring harbor and Oyster Bay.

Then Port Jeff a must.

5 hour trip, that's on a great day too. Is a long trip.

Wouldn't want to do that in the summer. When those afternoon westerlies kick up on the LIS you're going to have a long, wet, slog of a ride home. Not impossible but a long long day on the boat. If you could spend the night it would be a great trip.

I make that trip once or twice a season from Darien. You will want to avoid any wind with an East or Northeast in it. Any other direction you can pick which side of the sound to run and minimize the fetch. 21' and the race isn't going to be fun, so if you are traveling on the north side of the sound cross over well before you hit the race. Also be careful around the gut as waves can stack up there. I like Greenport a lot, and Sag is right around the bend.

Be safe and have fun.

I wouldnt make the trip alone thats for sure. I've been boating on the Sound in my 20ft CC and have had wind create havoc even coming back from Huntington (to Stamford). That could get messy very quickly heading all the way out to Greenport.

What is your planned route?

If me I would likely run shortest distance across the sound then coastwise along LI North Shore out to Greenport or alternatively hug CT coast then cut across to Greenport. I would like to have the option of lots of places to run into if weather came up or I had a mechanical issue.

Planning on leaving early morning on outgoing tide. If wind out of west or northwest plan on drawing straight line from Norwalk to Plum Gut. If South or Southwest will go along Ct. coast and crossover to Long Island side around Old Saybrook. Will be staying in Greenport for three days. Heading back on incoming tide. My boat is a 21ft. Polar dual console heavy boat deep vee handles slop pretty well.
