Default What line to use?

Been out of fishing for a number of years, but I really miss it. So I figured at my age (66), if I'm going back to it I better move. Ordered a new Regulator 34 and I've been getting some gear together. Just received six Penn Int'l 30 VSW's for trolling offshore with Penn Int'l V rods.

I don't have any experience with braid, but from what I've gathered that's the way to go.

What do you guys with all the knowledge recommend?

I use 200 lb Jerry Brown hollow on my 80's, Power Pro on everything else.

On a 30, 200 lb might be overkill. 100 to 150 braid with 110lb mono top should do you fine.

Give Basil a call at BHP tackle.

I wasn't recommending 200 lb just saying what I used. I wouldn't use a 30 for much of what I do, catch bait maybe.....

Thanks for the help. How much of a top would you use?

What are you fishing for? 100 or 150 yards should be good. Depending on what you are targeting, you might be able to just go 80/80 or 80/100.

There are guys that have forgotten more than I'll ever know about this, and hopefully they'll chime in, but I'd think you could go with 100lb braid with 150 yards of 100lb mono topshot and you'd be all set. I'd think you could get 500 yards of 100lb braid with 150 yards of 100lb mono and you should be good. If you end up getting into a 200lb bft though, you may want to fire the engines....

Thanks alot for the help. I've landed blue marlin, Pacific sails, countless dorado and even some 120# GT's on 30's. Sometimes it doesn't work but that's ok too. Thanks again.

I fish the same area as you and this is what I've got, 4 Penn 16VSX's with 80# JB hollow and a 100 foot 80# top (Jigging set ups). 4 Peen 30VSX's with 80# JB hollow and a 100 yard 60# top. 4 Penn 50VSX's with 100# JB hollow and and 100 yard 80# top. 2 Penn Penn 70 VS's with 200# JB hollow and 100 yard 130# top. Rig your 30's the same as I have it's more than enough. The majority of the bluefin we see in this area are at or under 100# so the big heavy stuff is really only needed when you know bigger fish are around or when sharking. If you want to buddy up come june PM me anytime I run out of Barnegat.

Bring some 15-20# spinners too for the mahi

For 30VSW's i would spool with 400 yards of 130 hollow spectra and a 100 yard 60lb or to 80lb mono topshot max. This puts 500 yards of line on the spool which for 30 class gear is perfect.

If you feel you need or want more line you can drop down to 80 or 100 hollow spectra and bump up the spectra capasity to up to 600 yards with the same topshot..

Be sure ot have a shop with the proper spooler load your spectra if it is not put on properly you will have problems..

I'll be doing canyon runs (no overnights-can't handle anymore) as well as the mid shore. Your advice is well taken, especially the bft size that ahve shown up in recent years. I will definitely get back to you in june. Thanks.

FYI, I just sent in a bunch of reels to Chris from Pelagic Outfitters (he's a sponsor on here)....to spool with the exact hollow core/top shot listing above...he was about $60 cheaper per reel then everyone else I spoke with.

Its been a while since I used 30's but my Tiagras are loaded with 100 lb JB hollow with a topshot of 80Lb Momoi mono. The last big fish we caught using them was a 86" 300+lbs BFT...shortly there after the 80s & 130s went on the boat
