Default Is anyone familiar with Buster's Marine in Queens (Broad Channel), NY?

Sorry - I posted this in electronics as well, but thought NY locals might have an answer for me here....

Am looking to get the new Raymarine E127 installed as a replacement for an old Furuno unit. I've talked to a couple of different local Raymarine dealers/installers. I was at my marina today (Gateway) and the service there is run by Buster's as it turns out. I met Dave who runs it, nice guy, and they are a full authorized Raymarine dealer. It would sure be a lot more convenient to have them do it since they are affiliated with my marina. Does anyone have any experience with these guys? Can anyone give me any guidance? THANKS!

Default Great Experience to report

I dealt with Dave at Busters a few years back. Had an issue with UPS losing my shipment, he got right on it and sent me replacement in less than one day. A four thousand dollar ($4,000) replacement! Great to deal with and responsive to my phone call.

if you see there shop in broad channel it looks more like a junk yard then boat yeard. Why not get one of the mobile electronics installers, hampton navigation, seacurity, pete norris, etc.

Default Great service on purchase from Buster's

Although I did not have any electronics installed by Buster's, I did purchase a 9.9 for a lake boat a few years ago from them. Their customer service was great.

Interesting - would love to know more. Which Raymarine unit do you have? Why do you like the Garmin? Thanks!

Care to expound upon your statement/experience? ;?

I know of many boaters that have had better than good experiences with NAVTECH.

As a matter of fact if you do a search right here you will see some of those reviews.

Listening...

I bought my boat there 9 years ago...(if its the same people) and i had problems with my 150 hpdi yamaha in under 20 hours... called them (i live in lower ct) and they wanted nothing to do with it.. 3 months and a tech directly form yamaha came out and diagnosed that it was an internal filter and also told me that the rigging was pretty sloppy and the fuel line was the wrong size.....
In addition they told me that they would deliver my boat in January and even after repeated un returned phone calls it was delivered in may...... and the place looked like a dump......( I contacted they online and only saw their yard when i was dropping off the check...- my gut told me that I shouldnt do business with them....should have listened to my gut

Big E, I hired him and paid him to go through my Raymarine E80 system and fix some issues mostly in regards tot he depth soudner not working. He advised on first look i needed a new raystar 125 antena and wanted to mount it on a 1 ft pole instead of the 4 ft it was currently on. He also wanted to remount my P79 in hull transducer. He charged me somewhere in the neighborhood of $700 in labor and had me pick up the parts. He glued the p79 directly to the hull, it never worked again and is impossible to remove. he had also taken the dsm 300 box back tot he shop for over a month claiming there was an issue and he had it sent in to raymarine for repair. I confirmed with raymarine it had never been there. when he came back to finsih the install, it was shortly before the baot was going in for winter storage, he claimed the barreries were dead so he couldnt test anything, When i went down to boat, batteries were full of juice and boat started right up too. nothing still worked correctly, then he avoided phone calls, and boat sat at the marina waiting for him for over 3 weeks before hauled for winter. he continuied to avoid phone calls in the spring, so he took my money and didnt complete the job. Cost me good money for a new transducer and for soemone else to fix the system. My statement is very valid as in he is a crook.

I'm very familiar with these crooks. I ordered some parts from these guys and never received all of my parts even though they billed my credit card. Called back to see where my parts were and they boldly told me they were still on their shelf. Two weeks later and still have not received all of the parts I paid for. Now when I call they take my name and number and tell me no one is in the parts dept. I'm currently disputing the charges with my cc company and in the process of filing a BBB complaint.

Growing up in Howard Beach I have always heard negative things about them, but they are the only ones around

I also know people who bought things from them, but just didnt use them for other things with positive experiences.

Default Buster's, Navtech, Norris - the conclusion to this thread and lessons learned (LONG)

Hi everyone, thanks for all the responses and feedback. So, the new Raymarine e97 is installed and works great. I wanted to let you know what I learned this saga AND set the record straight on a few things:

First off, to get to the point, I ended up hiring Pete Norris to do the install, simply because he was personally recommended to me by a couple of boaters I trust. He was very responsive (though no email - he does everything by phone), did a great job, worked on a rainy, windy day, and did a clean, craftsman-like install. I would recommend him highly.

This said, I also had a GREAT experience with Dave and the Buster's Marine guys. Long story short, when I went to unwrap my boat this spring at the marina, I discovered, to my dismay, that it had never been wrapped and had been exposed to the elements all winter. Mostly my fault since I apparently didn't check the "shrink wrap" option on the contract, but UGH! Thankfully, it was an incredibly mild winter.

Now, Dave and Buster's run the services at Gateway, NOT the marina. Dave happened to be there when I discovered my boat was out all winter. He offered to detail it for me. It was a couple of hundred dollars, but I figured the least I could do to get back to ship shape. Dave told me he would do it before the boat was scheduled to go back in the water the next week.

When I returned to the marina to launch the next week, I found two guys still cleaning the boat, and was surprised since it was supposed to have been done already. When Dave came by, he explained that the front of the boat trailer was also not put up on a block all winter. As a result, water had filled the inner hull and had been standing there all winter. They had to drain the water, then literally shimmy into the hull and scrub out the mildew and buildup. He said they had been working on it for 6 hours....

The boat looked like new. They did an INCREDIBLE job. So, while I didn't end up using them for the Raymarine install, I am a big fan of Dave, Ivon, and all the guys at Buster's.

One of the reasons I am writing this long post is that apparently, this thread has created some grief for them. One reason for the confusion, I think, is that there have been a few critical comments about Navtech. To be clear, Al and Navtech have nothing to do with Buster's. I checked out Navtech and spoke to Al, but decided not to use them. As a result I have no feedback to provide on them.

But to be clear, both Dave at Duster's and Pete Norris are HIGHLY recommended by me. If you want more info, please PM me, I'll be happy to discuss.

Again, thanks for all the responses, and I hope this saves many of you some time and grief!

Busters Marine is a shyster operation. Awful in every respect. I'm still trying to get a bill of sale on a boat so I can register it. Yikes. Run from these crooks.
