Default Wind direction and what it means

Can someone explain how the wind direction affects the ocean conditions in the Gulf of Maine?

I am trying to take all factors of a forecast into account, 2-3's with wind direction one way is often different then another for example.

Thanks for any insight.

I think what Doug is trying to say is in Mass Bay any wind coming off the water has time to build the seas higher and tighter, it will also take longer for the waves to lay down after it stops blowing. The same wind coming off land has less time to build waves because it is over water for a shorter period. For the same reason the waves will often lay down quicker after the wind subsides..

Another consideration is if the tide is against or with the wind. Tide against wind can stack them tighter and higher.

Spring and Fall Weather in newengland you gotta love it. And if you don't wait a minute it will change!!!

Alright thanks guys.

Lets take tomorrows forecast for example, " NW WINDS AROUND 10 KT...BECOMING N IN THE AFTERNOON. SEAS 2 TO 4 FT. "

Can one assume that these will be rollers and not chop due to the wind speed and direction? Or, what should one expect with that forecast?

I don't know why. But it seems the weather people can not really perdict the wind speed. Today was suppose to be SW 10-15. But on the water it was blowing 15-25. Tomorrow you will be faceing a hard chop until the wind changes. Then it is going to get a little lumpy out there when the wind changes.
I launch out of Sandwich. If the wind is greater then 5 knts. If the wind is from the NW,N,NE I'm heading to a choppy sea. If the wind is 10-15 your going to have 2-3 with ocational 4's. You have to remember . They are reporting knots and not mph.

Take the NOAA forcast 10-15mph wind and add the two together and that is usaullly what you get in the spring and fall, this time of year with the water temp around 44degrees the sea will build bigger and faster than 10-15 in the summer..

Wind impact depends on where you are. South west on Mass bay is generaly not bad unless it is howling. Generally SW is not bad close to shore. It can get crazy out on the bank.
Go to Buzzards Bay and watch out for SW. That is one crazy body of water.
