Default Illegal fishing off bridges. What to do?

I frequently fish around the local bridges at night targeting striped bass and blues . The guys fishing from the top of the bridges are becoming more problematic and not just for me the one trying to fish there. They also keep short fish which Iíve yelled up to them about and told them to throw them back otherwise Iíll call the authorities. These guys are are hanging lines down off the bridge where other boats are passing through. Last year I was passing through the bridge and a was almost smashed in the head with a 5oz bank sinker and a live eel with a circle hook. This guy was letting his rig down as I was coming through from the opposite side, his rig landed on the deck of my boat. These guys are really starting to piss me off. I donít want to call the police for such a trivial matter, Iím sure they have more important matters to deal with at midnight on Friday night. Should I call the DEC or the park police?

Call and report them to get the message out otherwise they will continue.

Definitely call it in. Fishing in the channel is a real hazard and annoyance

Either call it in or next time you pass under a bridge keep a large stick with you.....if your close enough to snag his line wrap it around the stick a couple times and hit the gas. They'll stop fishing for the night if the get spooled!

Call the state police if the are on bridges ,as a safety condition ,as they can be struck by oncoming traffic. Don’t believe there are walkways where you are talking about. So don’t feel bad if you saved some poor driving from killing some fool. Secondly, call dec and notify them of a continuous issue safety to you and short fish. Call them ahead of time and when you see infraction, so this way they can address it at an available time. The issue will never go away if you don’t ask the authorities to address it. It may never go away but at least you tried. Good luck and be safe.

Let the authorities handle it. If you get into a pissing match with some asshat the next 5oz sinker that hits ur boat most likely wonít be an accident.

I have a local bridge where numerous people fish illegally from the bridge from both topside and below. More often then not, they are keeping illegal fish and it drives me insane. It is an ongoing issue and they continue to leave trash and other garbage. Its a disgrace and I have brought it up to the village and local enforcement as well. These people have zero respect for the fishery and keeping the beach/area clean. We have the DEC here on occasion, and thankfully one of the times I was fishing off the beach I got the DEC officer's cell phone # and card. I will call them when I see illegally caught fish being kept, and people not playing by the rules. Some of these people bury their catch in the sand so if law enforcement does come there is nothing to be found. I have spoke my opinion a few times to these scum, but I am cautious, you never know who your messing with or if they are looking to fight.

I’m going to give the park police a call about it. The park police have jurisdiction in the areas of the bridges. Occasionally I see them stop on the bridge and hit the lights on the patrol car to scare them off it I think more needs to happen.

I don’t wanna do anything brash like cut them off or throw things at them. I don’t want them to bomb shit down on my boat.

I see them filling coolers up with schoolies and the one guy will run the cooler off the bridge to hide it. It burns my ass to see.

Game Warden is the only way to go. The message will get out loud and clear when massive fines are handed out and cars are taken since they have unlimited power with no checks and balances

You might want to also call the NYS DEC as they have primary jurisdiction over fisheries offenses in New York.

With a name like freeport Chris I’m assuming we’re fishing the same bridges. You need to call DEC. I’ve done it many times while fishing and seeing what’s going on. However it’s usually middle of the night and I’ve woken up the officer more than once. One didn’t know where the big meadowbrook draw bridge was. These guys are assholes casting right at the boat too and over your line. One night I was so pissed I stopped fishing and called DEC, state park police since I see them chase them off the bridge and then state police since they patrol the parkways. No one wanted to do anything. My friend is a cop and says they’re illegal and give a fake name and if worse crimes are forgiven, cops don’t spend time on this. I’ll add the mess of garbage left on the pier at the 3rd Wantagh.

Do these bridges have walkways? Don’t think meadow brook does not sure about wantagh. If they don’t ,call in to 911 ,as a person in roadway and an unsafe condition they will respond. Someone could get kill. Also if throwing things at boat, such, as weights, it is also considered a dangerous condition. As for illegalfishing it is DEC and bay constable. If they don’t respond speak to a supervisor during the day and maybe they can address this as a detail or a special op.

Yea man , I fish the Big M, Loop 1 ,and the Fundy. Always late night. The biggest offenders are always on top of the Big M. The cops come and chase them away then they return and carry on fishing again. Itís illegal to park on the side of the highway over there, I see them getting dropped off by car on the bridge then the same car will return to pick them up. Itís ridiculous because the state actually built fishing piers at the 3rd Wantagh bridge for fishing.

The Bridges do not have a foot path,There is a an area to stand though by center drawbridge towers. Where the bridge operator enters the tower. Thatís where they normally fish from.

Yes - but they all know that NYS put the fishing piers on that bridge specifically where the fish are not, which, according to them, is always in the center of the navigation channel under the bridge.

I’ve come to a decision now. Next time I’m out fishing at night and they’re there I’m going to call police and see if anything gets done. If no results from that I’ll roll up to the bridge ,gaff their lines and tow them till I get all their gear.
