Massachusetts Tautog Fishing
 

Has anyone been out tautog fishing yet this year. Not looking for any specific spots I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck landing any this spring. I usually don't splash the boat until may but thought it might be fun to try some fishing a few week early.

I’m going to splash the book next weekend, Woods Hole is 45F as of today so it will be soon. Few B&Ts are already carrying green crabs.

I went out Tuesday and tried some usually productive spots in Vineyard Sound. No fish caught and no marks on the sounder. At 44 degrees, the surface water is colder than when I have started catching them in the past. I usually don't have my boat in the water until April 15th or a week later, by which time the water is usually getting up into the high 40's or 50 degrees. I had never really tried this early -- now I know why! Might be worth a trip out to deep water but that will have to wait for the wind to die down.

Has anyone else done better in Vineyard Sound or Buzzards Bay?

Too early. Late April I'd say it will be fine to start.

fishing in MA? what's that look like. can you keep more than your bait?

Tautog season is open in MA. Three per person/10 per boat of 16" or greater until June 1, when it drops to 1 fish per person..

Is there any place in Cape Cod Bay for Tog? I know Buzzards Bay and places on the South Side of the Cape. Just looking for a shorter ride.

Looking forward to first trip. Got the boat back last week. Few trailer issues to work out, but it will be good to get out of the house.

Starting to pop up all over the place. Might need to grab some crabs here shortly!

Water temp is 47.1F at Woods Hole as of this AM.

some great spots out around p town - but depending where you are coming from, that may be even further (?)

If I put the boat in at Pamet, that's a short boat ride. I am in Eastham, so that's a great option. I will have to look on the charts and see what looks promising in that area.
