Default Martha's Vineyard Charter Recommendations

We rent a condo in Oak Bluffs for a week every July and this year I want to charter a boat (1/2 day) for me and my two boys (13 & 16) for some inshore fishing (Stripers, Blues, etc.). We've typically rented a Whaler or fished on one of the party boats but this year I'd like to surprise them and charter a boat for just the family. Maybe catch something other than Black Bass or Sea Robins! I know they would be thrilled to land a good size Striper. Willing to pay for a knowledgeable Captain and a nice boat.

I’m taking a wild guess but I think you want to hook up the kids with Stipers, not strippers, correct?

Do you have a preference on how you fish?

My comment, you might want to wait till it is a little closer to your visit. Depending on what is happening, you might want to charter out of Menemsha, OB/VH or Edgartown. Unless you don’t mind a boat ride as part of the experience....

I’ve heard good things about Clarke Charters out of Menemsha.

Wow, my bad! Yes, the fish not the fishnet type!

No preference. We've mainly bottom fished but troll once in a while depending on if the Blues are running. Just wanted to start researching boats now. Don't plan to book anything until we're closer to the date. Good captains/ boats I expect book quickly, especially for the high summer season (July/ August).

My Brother charters almost exclusively does Black Sea Bass trips these days. They are good guys and worth a call. You also have the Falmouth boats to choose from, we aren't far way. I do Oak Bluffs pickups as does a few other charter boats and we don't have Island prices.

Luke (Obsession) runs a great charter , can pick you right up off the dock and be fishing in 10-15 minutes. He knows the waters as well as anyone, he's been fishing there for about ...forever !! You would not be disappointed with him

Really depends on what you want to catch
and you said striped bass
so kind of have to go out of menemsha.
if you want to catch a trophy bass 50-60lbs
call nick at feather wedge charters.
although this will be an intense no messing around
trip 110% fishing. The captain takes monster
bass very seriously.
if you want to be a little more relaxed and comfortable
and probably catch a nice bass and probably a bunch of other stuff
call Scott at bassnblue charters
or Jen Clarke or buddy vanderhoop
i know all these captains and can vouch for there abilities.

I re-read your post and I think captain Scott McDowell would be your man
nice big fast Duffy (Lauren C)and knows his stuff
north shore charters,Website bassnblue.com
tell him simon sent you!
also I grew up and live in menemsha so I’m a little biased!
it is the best fishing port on mv.
not saying you can’t catch fish out of ob, vh, or edg though.

I really appreciate all of your input. Lot to consider. I'm not averse to using a Falmouth based boat as long as the pick-up/ return to home port times don't factor into the fishing time. My wife grew up in OB but we love Menemsha. My kids fish off the jetty and crab at the docks.

Capt Buddy Vanderhoop - it’s been a while but always killed it every time I’ve chartered with him. “Bass is my business and business is good”

Ask him about the time Keith Richards divebombed him in a WWII bomber he rented.

The Rolling Stones Keith Richards? How did he know it was him? Speaking of Celeb's, sat directly in front of Bill Murray at a MV Sharks (part owner) game last summer. Very personable.

Buddy doesn’t troll much any more, mostly anchors up and fishes bait. It’s a rare day that he doesn’t come back to the dock with nice big stripers. Usually Jen Clarke does the same style fishing. Scott McDowell and Jonathan Boyd (Menemsha Blues charters) still troll mostly. All of them are very good, knowledgeable and experienced captains with nice boats. Take your pick of the Menemsha boats, you will have a good time.
