Looking for day trips on Long Island sound. Is Captains Cove in Bridgeport CT worth a visit?

If its in bridgeport, I tend to doubt it.

Sorry for the not helpful response but BPT is pretty rough.

Ya I know the city is pretty tough but they have been working on the shoreline and by the looks of Captains Cove it is somewhat removed from the core part of Bpt. Just looking for some new places to cruise to without running for 2 hours

There is a North East sub-forum: https://www.thehulltruth.com/northeast-33/

I made a thread with a list of dockside dining locations in a Google Doc Sheet

Captains Cove is OK to check out once in a blue moon but I would not venture outside of the property or make it a common visit

There aremuch better places to go via boat!

The Boca Oyster bar in Bridgeport was recently opened. I went this weekend for a drink. Reviews online seem to be mixed. Can be accessed by boat, too.

Boca is pretty solid - drinks and food were good...they haven’t been open long so give them a break for getting the kinks worked out. Plenty of dockspace to tie up, just don’t bother calling on the radio as you’re more likely to see a guy in the dock upon approach.

Captains Cove is kinda funky, basically a big snack bar with entertainment. The bar upstairs is pretty cool.

Stratford also has a couple restaurants right on the Housatonic River - Knapp’s Lansing on the west side just inside the break wall, Outriggers which is located a mile up at the Brewers Yard, then Joey C’s at the Boardwalk Marina on the west side between the Rt 1 and I95 bridges...on the opposite side a new beer garden is opening this fall in Devon.

good luck!

I'd pick the town docks in Norwalk over Captains Cove. Walk over the bridge to South Norwalk. Plenty of places to eat and drink. If you wan't to hang out with the meatheads, you could always go the the Crab Shell in Stamford. Always plenty of entertainment people watching.

Hi,

If you are looking for a day trip, I think captains cove is a good choice, depending on what you want. I have not been in a couple years, but, I doubt its changed much. The time to go is Sunday afternoon. They have live music outside and its busy. I've think the food was decent for what it is, as seafood snack bar type operation. There is free visitor docking, either on a dock right in front with side to docking. or, across the channel there are slips you can use and they run a "ferry" back and forth. The slips have no access to land.

As you mentioned its not right in Bridgeport, its black rock harbor, you do not enter bridgeport harbor.. There is a string of shops in "sheds" on the property, where you can get ice cream and various trinkets.

If you are looking for others, I think Northport Long Island is one of the best day trip spots around.

Captain's Cove is not in Bridgeport Harbor its about a 20 minute ride west of it. I've been dozens of times with my family and its a great spot to pull up for a quick bite and ice cream, not sure the sit down options are any good or not. Entertainment that's worth a walk around at least. If you go up the Housatonic be aware of the probably 5-6kt current that rips through there I've seen many a boats try and pull up to Knapp's Landing and trade paint with the dock. What is in Bridgeport Harbor all the way in and to the right is Lewis Gut, which is great for water sports depending on your draft and tide or just anchoring. The burned out bridge and remnants of the amusement park? that were there are interesting to check out. Some old wrecks in the marsh too.

Capt Cove is in Black Rock Harbor, which is about a mile of a no wake zone. It's not dangerous at all is a fun stop, especially on Sundays when they have live music. Lots of families there on Sundays. Food is fine, drinks are cold, and there are some little shops right there on the dock with clothes, jewelry, ice cream, candy, etc. If you haven't been I'd say go and make up your own mind. Bport is a total shithole, but this place is totally fine you are not exposed to any of the bad elements when you go here.

Years ago I had my boat at Captain Cove Marina. After a few weeks I realized it's in the shadows of the Bridgeport projects.............after one year, I was outta there !!
