Default Boston Harbor Fishing Update

Has everyone else been in a slump for big fish or is it just me? I'd like to think Im a halfway decent fisherman, although I'm much better at avoiding any and all fish and emptying a cooler. I've been doing well on the topwater blitzes early and late in the day- producing 20" fish pretty consistently, but have yet to see anything larger.

I spent 2 hours this morning in all the usual spots outside the harbor searching for mackerel, and came up with only 4 macs- although meaty and active baits. Drifted these in a few different spots where I have caught keepers before and wasn't even able to mark any fish, let alone get any bites.

The water is just breaking 60 and I'm attributing the cold water with the lack of bait, which in turn is the lack of big fish.

Is anyone else having the same results, or is my luck really that bad?

You can catch small fish inside the harbor till your arms fall off.
Outside the harbor there are big fish but not in great numbers yet.
Everything is very late this year.
My trips last week, fishing outside, smallest fish 18 lbs, biggest 46.5 lbs, a bunch of 20-30 lb fish in between.
mackeral and schools of pogies outside

Good to hear you've had some luck this early and glad its not just me. In years prior I've done pretty well in late May and early June so just surprised how late things are. Thanks for your insight.

When you say "outside" the harbor, I assume you mean out past the light houses? When fishing in deeper water like that, I assume the technique is similar to that of inshore-- drift live baits over structure (humps, drop-offs, etc.)? Or is it more about finding bass actively feeding on schools of macs/herring/pogies?
