Default Marina Fire- Scituate

Big Marina fire at Scituate Harbor Marina and fuel dock, I don’t know details but have seen plenty of pictures. Fuel explosion while boat was on fuel dock, has spread to a couple boats.

Hope those involved are uninjured. Doesnt look like it got out of control.

My boat sits in the front row there, but is currently getting painted.

I usually try not to swear on all of my different forum postings but WHAT THE ****, that's scary. Probably the worst case scenario for a liveaboard like me. I'd rather have my lines cut or have a thru hull fail then deal with a fire.

What the hell happened?

Not the Millwarf dock, there is another gas dock in the outer harbor by the boat ramp and the yacht club and thats where this happened.

Yes, what happened here? What was the source of ignition? You would think that the fuel dock would have the proper safeguards to prevent this from occurring.

Not to make light of it, but that's a terrible name for a boat "Sea Smoke". Perhaps they jinxed themselves.

I was there working on my laptop in the ramp parking lot 50 yards from it. Felt the boom in my chest and called 911 as soon as i looked up. flames an easy 25 ft in the air and saw the dad throw the 3 kids into the water through the flames. Scary as hell. I watched the family load into the boat, untie, put around the dock and tie up to the fuel dock. I hope the FD publishes the source of the fire if possible whether on the fuel dock side or the boat side. Good on the person working the pump to hit the emergency shut off. Extraordinary luck on the family's part that the wind was blowing across the dock and not across the boat, I watched the guy in the dinghy who recovered them push off the ramp minutes before, he had the family out of the water in seconds.

The one frustrating part is that i called 911 and said "Big fire at scituate harbor marina get emergency services here immediately" The dispatcher responded with, "what state are you in". In this age of technology why does this happen. The NSA can listen to you anywhere anytime, why can't 911 know what state you are in. Not a knock on the PD just a call for a better system.

Lucky lucky lucky.

Gotta agree with the fire chief on the WCVB video, marina fires are about the worst thing they have to fight! Luckily it wasn't much worse! Can't believe the harbormaster moved the burning boat away from the dock! Bravo!

I see the boat was a SeaSwirl. My SeaSwirl had some of the worst wiring I've seen on a boat! I wonder what they will figure out was the cause?

if i were to imagine what it might look like if fuel spilled into the bilge and ignited from the bilge pump it might have looked like this. lots of possible causes.
