NJ Canyons Fishing

About to upgrade to a 28cc in a couple weeks and am looking to make a few runs out to the canyons to try and catch some tunas.

Any tips on good weather sites, lures, what to bring etc. Anything helps.

Ripcharts and Fishweather......seawitches/islanders with Ballyhoo and spreader bars. Learn to read the water conditions and weather and be prepared (epirb, ditch bag, sea tow/boat us, buddy boats, float plans, etc)

Do a search up top and there are hundreds of threads on this stuff....my best advice is to go with others a few times and tweak what you see to fit what you want to do. Keep your expectations low in the beginning as you learn and keep at it.

What inlet do you leave from? A lot of guys buddy boat and work together out there always a good idea especially from a cc where we usually day trip. Get a Garmin inReach and good network of intel. PM me your contact info and Iíll be happy to help you getting started. Itís very addicting a not a cheap game!

i agree with this. We run out of Cape May on a 27í Sea Hunt Gamefish. Networking with other captains is always good. VERY EXPENSIVE habit but rewarding.

Question from a Florida fisherman ! When running out of Cape May, how many miles do you typically cover in a day of fishing the canyons ? Are there more than one set of canyons you guys fish ? Capt. Billy/Right Stuff

It's rare but not unheard of to hit two canyons, but they are pretty far apart so you'll end up eating up a lot of time and fuel running and not fishing. Much more common is to hit inshore structure on the way in / out. From OCMD where we hit many of the same canyons as the southern NJ boats it's 55 nms -- that's 66 road miles -- to the canyon tips. For reference, it's ~15 nms from the poormans to the baltimore, another 15ish to the wilmington. This is canyon wall-to-wall, not necessarily the most productive areas within each canyon to fish

Agree with Cletus that it is typically more of an inshore/offshore move than up and down the line (canyon) for a day trip. That being said, many guys do overnight trips to the canyon where they leave mid day fish the late PM troll bite, then do something different at night (drift for swords, troll big eyes, chunk yft, sharkiní) then do something else at first light before coming home late morning. Since you have more time, you can reposition to another canyon during the night. I grew up fishing out of Cape may and now fish mostly out of OCMD. Spencer, Wilmington and Baltimore are their closest options in cape may but you see the cape May boyz in poor mans and even the Washington when the bite is hot.

were out of Cape may the inshore bite has been good to us the past few years even though I didnt get out last year. you may want to try chunking at the lumps. always nice to catch fish in the 40-60 mile range. were gonna try and do some canyon fishing this year and hope to have a better year and more time to fish. half the reason we want to canyon fish this year is were set up with deep drop gear for tiles

If any of these guys running out of cape may want to put me on the list I would appreciate it, always good to have a group to share intel with and buddy up with. I work shift work and am able to run mid-week to avoid the weekend crowds. I run a 26' CC with twin 200's out of Cape May.

I'm out of Cape may as well. We mainly fish inshore but run to the edge if there's fish there.

As far as lures go I would highly suggest buying a couple of sets of Sterling wide trackers. They have just come out with a 36" wide tracker in machine or bulb squid. Purple/Black and a set of Green is my go to colors. You can thank me later lol
