Wed 0/0
Thurs 1/1 all we saw
Fri 0/1 jumped her off. Wire nut hit the same ball 5 mins later and won the tournament. Lack of fish made us all equals for the most part this year. Still can't get over that white was hung on a black Bart and an 80. Thanks to slickcav and others for trading info.

I believe I saw they were Kent Island guys. May be the same, plenty of KI fish out of Chincoteague.

One thing was local boats cleaned up this year. Nice to see when you see the $$$ involved in the boats and competition.
That's what I thought on entry, between talking with my uncle and what I had seen.

Coastal Fisherman says Kent Island as well, and that it is the same boat that won the Blue Marlin division last year.

As someone who doesn't fish up there, what do you mean hit the same ball? Is that a bait ball you were marking that you were fishing around and got the hit on and then they caught the fish on?

Really love following this tournament, their live feed on Facebook is fun to watch too.

Big poly lobster balls on the 100line usually attract bait fish mahi etc

Boat is an OC boat. He keeps it in the marina adjacent to Harbour Island so they are just about as local to the tournament as they can get. He used to have an old Chris Craft flybridge back in the day. I think this is the first year he's had the Capps.

Different boat then the BM winners last year but a similar crew (Jim Conway, the angler of the winning BM last year was on the Wirenut this year).

Heard your story from a buddy of mine. Must've been maddening to have her not eat at your spread then go commit suicide on their black bart.

We had the same results as everyone else:

Wednesday: Headed to Poormans didn't see what we wanted (cold water) pushed North. Worked a line of pots finally snagged a 10lb mahi of one then shortly after a 20lb yellowfin. Water still cool in the Baltimore. Saw a temp break on XM near masseys decided to make the move inshore. Mistake. Water was the right temp but dirty and green. 175 miles run.

Thursday: Headed south to the Norfolk. Had a white come up on the teaser but wouldn't eat. Then had one in the dredge but missed him. Finally hooked a nice one 20 minutes prior to lines out. Looked like a weighable fish while tailing 100yds back but who knows, a little too much drag and straightened the hook, wanted to puke. 213 mile run.

Friday: Back to the Norfolk for the last day. One small mahi on the troll, no billfish, hit a barrel and bailed 15 slingers and three triggers. 221 mile run.

Long three days but lots of fun and we will be back next year.

Thanks for the report. I heard from a handful of boats who didn't see a billfish all week...

From the reports we got during the week sounds like we did better than most espically since we were one of the smaller boats in the tournament. Hated losing that fish though. That one hurt.

Some of the top billfishing teams and boats in the world saw 2 fish in 3 days of fishing.

Some saw one.

Then yesterday a local boat has 9 bites in the same canyon we fished Friday!

Our 0/1 was a jump off. I hooked a white off that ball a few mins before Wire Nut got bit. But by the time the circle got tight I was past half spool. First jump she was gone. Doubt it was the same fish but yea, that's not what I wanted to picture when I think of WMO17. (And it was a hanging...FML).

Went 3 for 4 on whites and missed a blue on Monday.

Thursday went to Wilmington trolled south zig zagging over the wall. Didn't see a thing

Friday went to Baltimore then down all over the Washington to a little south with nothing to show.

Can't believe how much water we covered without seeing a fish Thursday and Friday.

We scored two nice Whites and 8 Mahi today, beautiful conditions. Here are the displays at Sunset that I took pics of before heading out:

Thanks for clearing that up. Unfortunately I didn't make it down for WMO week this year, so I only could go by what I read/heard and saw on the live feed when I could watch it.

Sounds like it's not the winning WM team though.

No, not the top white marlin winner. Frost passed his polygraph, it was one of the other white marlin placers I believe. Also had a second prize winner test inconclusive on the polygraph and was retested. This may end up going against the usage of polygraph testing for the tournament.
