Default Choptank/Cambridge--charter/ride along/new boat?

I am working on a renovation project in Cambridge MD that will have me looking to get out on the river and Bay in the near future. Looking for charters at this point to learn the area and waters as I plan to eventually purchase the "right" size CC for the area. I grew up fishing Lake Erie smallies and the Finger Lakes and have been on many striper charters (Boston/Cape Cod/NH areas). I've owned/operated boats from 14'-20' since I was a youngster. I'd also be happy to pay my way with an individual going out for the day so I can see and learn what works. I think this area is pretty cool, and unique, due to the length of the Choptank and being able to go upstream and fish more freshwater species. This, of course, leads to the inevitable--what's the right boat question?!? Big enough CC (22-25') for the Bay might be too big to go far enough upstream, go the other way and you'll get wet and/or have a miserable day if it gets choppy on the bay and your in a 18-20'....so, I need to get on the water and get some local experience! I'll be in the area on very random times for the next couple of months, so starting to network now in the hope that we can get something together for one of my next visits.
Thanks,
B8fish

Capt. Phil Gootee. His boat is docked at Cambridge Creek. He runs live line, troll and cast/jig charters.

Also, in the late fall Tyler Nonn with Tidewater Charters will be in town for jigging/casting the Fall Fish which is a blast. He is a superb charter captain that I've fished with from the Keys, Cap Charles and in the Bay and Choptank River. Tyler charters in the keys around Dec-April, Cape Charles April - Sept-ish, Choptank/Bay Oct-Nov ish. The above is a guesstimate pending on the weather and bite.

So far as what boat it is hard to beat a chawk, privateer, parker, sea ox, sou'wester for the no frills plain jane CC for the Choptank. Be careful on the aforementioned boats as they have wood in the floor, stringers and transom. Do a thorough inspection and you'll be good. Chawks are my fav as they can be had for short money on craigslist or FB marketplace from time to time.

Default Reach out to Eastern Shore Light Tackle

Give Jamie Clough a buzz, he’s a too notch light tackle guide in your area that can teach you to fish the waters you’ll be on based on years of experience. He runs a 23’ parker, so you can ger a feel for a boat in that size range as well. Highly recommend Jamie.

That’s awesome! He’s one of the best light tackle guys on the bay. No doubt he’ll put you on the fish!
