Default Trolling Gear for Mahi, Kings, Spanish

Not sure if Iím headed in the right direction at all but this is where Iím at..

I have 4 older TLD 20s I was thinking of putting on some 7í Ugly Stick bigwater 30-50lb rods. Spool the TLDs with 40# braid with some heavier fluro topshot.

I donít have much experience trolling so please offer any suggestions. Only thinking about the US rods so I donít break the bank.

for Spanish, kings, bluefish and Mahi, rockfish etc.... , since you have the reels would say go for it... worst can happen would happen is get crushed by a tuna and get spooled, would look at 5 1/2í-6í-6 1/2í Ande tournament rods also. Not a fan of 7í trolling rods to long to fight the leverage of the longer rods

Use 65# braid or you will go broke or die of boredom trying to fill them with 40.

100' Of 30# Momoi Diamond will make the perfect topshot for those, save the fluoro for leaders.

Cut 4" off the butt of those big water rods and epoxy a new gimbal on - game changer.

If you are just going to use them trolling, I would just spool them with straight 30# mono, and one could argue that even that is overkill for the fish you are targeting. As for rods, the ugly sticks will work but are a little long for trolling. I have been really happy with my Star rods. Ande also makes a good trolling rod for cheap.
