Default Northern Neck Fishing 2019

Haven't seen anyone start a thread yet for 2019. Got out over the weekend in the Lower Bay and found the Spanish thick as far north as Mobjack, with the warm weather i'd guess it will be an early season for us. Passed a lot of bait on the way down there and back from the Rapp

Caught good numbers of speckled trout over the weekend in the Rappahannock. A few weeks ago I was catching numbers of keeper striper on topwater but that bite has seemed to slow down.

Finally got the new boat set up and gear aboard. I'll be out on the water this Thursday - Saturday.

I posted in the other thread but this is more my taste. I struck out cobia fishing this weekend but managed to catch plenty of schooly rockfish and speckled trout. Caught a bluefish too. I'm really hoping the cobia fishing lights up this weekend.

Fowl, can I ask where "generally" you were on the Rapp? I'm new to all of this and even a hint of a tidbit of info would be greatly appreciated. Please PM if preferred.

Thanks!

Dun

Near the mouth on the Middlesex side, really just working any structure I can find. Most were caught in less than 4 feet of water with a bull minnow under a popping cork with about 2 feet of leader. If you catch one chances are there are more nearby.

I will be out by PL & SPL this weekend. Hoping to find the "Man in the Brown Suit" over by the Target ship. Need to get my redemption from the one that straightened my hook last year.

I was near the mouth of the rapp on the Middlesex side, caught everything in around 3 foot of water. Fishing pretty much any structure I can find. Most fish were caught on a minnow and popping cork with about 2 foot of leader. Generally if I caught one speck there were more around.

Happens every now and then around here.
Caught a blue last year on a ratl trap I had hanging off the side of the boat while trolling for rockfish.
I was cranking it in when another rod got, I left it in holder and forgot about it.

Couldn't have been more than 5' deep in 30 fow

Thinking of heading out mid/late this week. Trying to figure out what to chase. Normally I target specks in the piankitank and rap, but I’m not sure if they are heating up yet. My second option would be chumming windmill/stingray for Cobia. Any one had luck with the specks or reds in those areas?

Picked up a few Cobia at Windmill on Friday before the rain set in.

looks like a bullhead or bullhead/channel hybrid. Definitely not a flatty

I've had some good luck with specks around the piankitank, rapp, fleets bay areas. Fish grass beds, docks, rock piles and you'll get on them. I've had good luck so far the past month and I suspect it will get better. I haven't caught any puppy drum yet. I think the cobia are finally hanging out around windmill point so you should have some luck there if you put in the time. Good luck and tight lines

I was so disappointed this weekend to see the wind pickup. I couldn't get off work early on Friday to go down cause I knew the forecast was not looking great for the weekend. I'm not fond of going out with 3 foot swells by myself. Both days turned into a washout. It gets really frustrating when you're only able to go down on weekends and the weather is bad on those two days.

I find if you know some of the local watermen that own & operate the Fish Nets that are out & about up the banks of the rivers & mouth of creeks, you can get some from them for a bit of $$$

Where on the NN? If you're near White Stone and Kilmarnock then go to Pride of Virginia Bait & Oyster. They have fresh bunker.
