    I vote a 15' whaler for your son. I am biased. I've owned one since I was 14. It is now for sale. 15' 1982 with 2001 70 hp Johnson. newer binnacle, great shape. restored about 2.5 years ago - painted with 2 part lpu for durability. $5300. very solid boat. pictures here:

    if you buy an older Whaler, just be sure the hull doesn't have water intrusion into the foam. on mine, all screws have been overdrilled, filled with epoxy, and re-drilled. This seals out water.
