Give me a short lesson on GAIN. When to use and exactly what it's purpose is.

Auto mode is the easiest and typically most effective way to use the Fishfinder on your 178. You can basically increase the gain which increases the output power of the Fishfinder. You'll simply need to figure out what works best for you in regards to gain. Don't be afraid to play with it. The more you increase it, the more you will see, this includes more clutter too. So you have to find a happy medium that suits the kind of fishing you are doing. Looking for baitfish? You might really crank it up for that.
