Default JL tweeters rusted and broke SOLVED! Great job JL!

I just pulled 2 sets of JL 7.7's and the tweeters litterly rusted and shattered out of the frames. Is this typical? They weren't cheap.

Thoughts?

I am dealing with the same thing right now. I have one 6.5" and one 8.8" that i am having to replace, my speakers are roughly 3 years old.

you'll have people, mostly JL dealers, tell you that it's not typical.
Based on my personal experience and based on the somewhat regular flow of these same complaints online, I beg to differ.

I have read similar reports, but only after I acquired 6 JL speakers.

Similarly I also read it was supposedly due to a bad run of speakers going back a few years and that it is supposedly not a problem with the more current production run.

How old are they and are they the M or MX series?

I have 4x 8.8's and 2x 7.7's all are rusty, 4/6 no longer work. About 5 years old.

I was told this same thing at the boat show form one of the venders. He could not give any answer as to what JL is doing to help since they know there was a bad batch of speakers out there with this problem. Hopefully someone can chime in here from JL with answers. Theses speakers are definitely not cheap and I will not think twice at looking at the competition when I'm ready to replace them...

I had 6 on my boat and 4 of them rusted out within a couple of years. Did not buy JLs to replace them.

Yes it does, I've got 6 in my SeaVee and a JL amp. They're coming out so I can replace my tanks and paint the interior. Not sure I'll be putting JL back in.

Were they legit JL Marine speakers, or just car speakers installed in the boat?

I have Polk marine speakers in my bowrider. They look great, and I've gotten them wet several times last season and they still look and function like new.

This is a JL marine speaker problem.

For better worse, it at least seems one can replace the grill and tweeter assembly.

I ordered 2 of the cover/tweeter pieces to replace my worst ones . If they work out I'll post pics . Hopefully they do as I don't need to dump 2K into stereo stuff right now
