For anyone considering buying the repair grille /cover they are very easy to install. Mine still sounded great but were an eyesore . I only ordered 2 to start but as I have 6 speakers I will order 4 more kits. I am not the original purchaser of these speakers so I wouldn't expect JL to assist even though it's a very common failure.

A place for water to drain probably would've prevented this issue. Thats the bottom of the tweeter.

Make sure you wipe the residual rust stains out before reassembly.

Reassembled. I won't be able to hear them until my project is done but at least the eyesore is gone.

FYI:

This happened to 16 JL speakers on my 42. I email and complained to JL that it basically should not happen. Long story short, they said that in the early production of the the tweeters the machine that sealed them was off by a minuscule amount, therefore allowing water intrusion. They said it has since been corrected and they sent me new tweeter/grills for all my speakers so they would match, 20 i believe, for free. JL audio customer service was very accommodating and easy to work with. The new ones have been on for 3 years now and are still perfect so I do believe the issue has been corrected

Good to hear. I will be inspecting all of mine since I am the original purchaser. I know I have at least two that have rust coming from the tweeter. I will check mine on Friday and give them a call.

Great. I just bought some 650s and 770s and was worried about the rust. Thanks for the info.

I have JL in 3 boats, and all have held up flawless:

2010 install (Saltwater)
2011 install (Freshwater)
2016 install (Saltwater)

I do rinse them with fresh water after every time out for the boats in saltwater.

Update from the thread starter:

I have been in contact with JL and they have really gone above and beyond to make this right! Great customer service, I totally recommend going with JL on all projects. They even included a nice hand written note!
