Default B164 transducer question

In my new to me boat I have a b164 20deg transducer hooked up to dual garmin 4212. I am no expert and learning about how to read my sonar but I do realize that there are better transducers out there. I fish mostly on the reef in 50-200ft but plan on getting in to deep dropping in the next few months (tiles, grouper, queens, etc .. Not swords)

My question is this : will this transducer be sufficient for my type of fishing that I do now and for deep dropping in the future? I'm not crazy about the idea of drilling another hole in the boat for a different transducer but if the b164 is going to be subpar I could do a straight swap for a better transducer.

Unless you are going to a newer more technologically advanced plotter, the 164 should provide good service.
chrisrack and OliMiami like this.

I think the features for B164 will help you.If external black box does not support Chirp, B164 is enough

Frequency 200 kHz
High Freq Beam 6º
Max Angle Coverage 26m
Max Depth 244m

Frequency 50 kHz
Low Freq Beam 22x20º
Max Angle Coverage 94mx86m
Min Angle Coverage
Max Depth 549m

Thank you. I'm not sure if I have a black box. How do I tell?

If you are using a 4212..then you are using a black box..possibly a GSD 22 or the GSD 24.

Thank you. If I had a black box that supports Chirp, would the b164 still be sufficient?

No, the CHIRP black box ( GSD 26) for the 4212 will not be compatible with the B164.

I have the B164 with Simrad NSE and it does all you'll need unless you move up to a chirp unit. I've been over 2000 feet and haven't lost bottom. Also it holds bottom well at most any speed although I imagine that would depend more on your hull and installation.

I had a GSD-22 connected to my B164.....I hated it. Bought a used GSD-24, WOWSER! MUCH better imagery and 10X better finding fish.

Do yourself a favor.....upgrade to the best box that works with Traditional sonar...GSD-24. Ebay or THT classifieds...$400 or so...
