Default What’s the Garmin 86 series do that the 76 series doesn’t?

They all seem to be capable to run the same transducers, am I missing something?

The 8600xsv has LiveSope and Ultra Hi def sonar circuits built in...direct connection of the transducers, no black box needed.
It can use the LVS 12 transducer direct for LiveScope...and the GT34UHD transducer direct for the Ultra High Def Side/Down scan.

With the 7600xsv units both of those 2 sonar features will require external black boxes...so added costs.

A total of 3 transducer ports on the 8600xsv......vs 2 ducer ports on the 7600xsv.

And they render maps instantly instead of big white boxes that slowly fill in.

What does the ultra hi def do? I’m not to concerned about the map loading. I mean it’s 1200 difference between 1242 and a 8600. I don’t see 1200 dollar difference. I plan to use side scan and downscan.

the 7612 xsv don't need black box to run the transducers, i was told the 86 series has better screen resolution, video in and out, HDMI and faster processor, and the port for the chip is now on the rear of the unit

The 1242 xsv has a single 12 pin transducer port. The 8600xsv units have 2, the 8 pin as well as the 12 pin.

The 7600 does require black boxes if you want the UHD or livescope. It has built it for the normal transducers only. I purchased a new to me boat in July and added 7612s. Had I known about the 8600s coming I would have waited. Would have saved some console space and wiring. Also, the 8600 has a slightly smaller footprint for the same screen size. Enough so, that I could squeeze in dual 16s vs 12s. If I recall correctly, it is the same price as the 7600s were initially. I believe they lowered the price on the 7600s.

Personally, I would pay the extra for the 8600 series primarily for future expansion or upgrades. You never know whats coming out.
