Default Sonar question..

I have a question and everyone will think I'm nuts but why is it that everone keeps their sonar in the "arch mode" as opposed to the fish symbol when viewing the FF screen?
Thank you.

For those who know hw to interpret it, the raw data can give a better picture of what’s going on.

also, many iterations of the “fish symbol display” over the years have been quite, shall we say flaky so many people just don’t trust them and consider it a worthless gimmick (no matter how good the latest technology may be)

mickt243, Thank you for the reply. I thought the FF companies had refined the sonar and fish symbols so that the actual FF unit can determine what is and what isn't a fish better than we can. However, my Garmin has never shown any bait fish only the larger fish via the fish symbol. If I change my unit to show the arches and not the symbols, will I then get more info? Thank you, Bob

On my Simrads each little piece of weed would generate a fish symbol, whereas arches are most always fish and weed looks different on the display. And different species of fish of the same size can have very different displayed arches.
On a very slow day it can be optimistically entertaining to degrade to fish symbols though.

Over time, and with some guidance, you can learn to interpret that the arches and different colours represent different fish species and bait, and bait schools.

You can never do that with the little fishy pictures!

Apparently I have been missing out on a lot of info. When I get to my boat, this coming week, I will switch over to the arch display. I have fished with this FF for 5 years now and in the arch display have never really seen a fish arch. In the fish symbol mode I started seeing fish symbols right away. So I will go back to arch mode but do I have to change the "sensativity" due to going from fish symbols to arch display? Hey, I'm sorry for all these questions but I get so very agitated and frustrated when I have a good piece of equipment and I am basically too stupid to put it to use. Thank you, Bob
