Default Bottom lock with DS600x in 850'

I realize that this may be a hard question to answer, but here goes..When I was out Halibut fishing last week, I noticed that I had a problem. I can't seem to lock onto the bottom very well. The ocean conditions were 2-4' swells and a foot or two of wind chop. I would say 60% of the time I was doing about 20-26 mph. I began having problems after say 400'. The real dissappointment came when I was drifting and REALLY had a hard time. The depth was about 865' and the bottom would barely ever show. I cranked the power to 100% and put it in 50khz mode. I am sure the xducer is working both 50 & 200khz. Also, the xducer alignment is right on. The boat was rocking pretty good while drifting.

Am I expecting too much?
Do I need a more powerful xducer?

If the boat is "rocking pretty good", it doesn't really matter what transducer, or what power your using. You will loose the bottom. Think about it, when the boat is at a 30 degree angle, the ducer can be pointing almost sideways, how is it supposed to be "locked" on the bottom?

I have held bottom up to about 900', above that is iffy for these units at a couple hundred watts. So you were on the borderline of it's limit in salt water, and were rocking to make it worse.

My 400DX holds bottom well up to at least 1850' (deepest I have had it) on a drift or slow troll. At cruise I start losing bottom at around 300-500'. If I slow down it comes back. I have the transom mount ducer mounted as a "shoot thru" in my bilge on a Twin Vee cat. Very pleased with this unit so far.

I think adding a through hull xducer to my aluminum boat would be scary. But i'm sure I would get better depth. The drag is using a transome mount style. I'm sure I get more interference. ...On very rare occasions do I wish I had fiberglass. This is one of those occasions. Otherwise, out here on the west coast, it's not so bad.

like the builder got plenty of power, if you can set the cone angle try widening it in heavy seas, but a tighter angle will give you more clarity. you may know this

ok, aluminum, external mount, yes expecting too much, there is a shoot through they say is good, but i dont know about aluminum and foam filling interfierance. ther is also a trans. that can go over the side with a wing to make it troll parallell to bottom. I think there is nothing left to advent, fisherman have such amaising minds.

I kinda was afriad of that too much thing. I wish I could vary the cone angle, not possible though....I sure wish the thru-hull design was a better option for me. Man, I feel real weird even THINKING about drilling down there! But, if the system was really going to give better perfomance, I guess I would consider...
