Default Newbie? Converting Lat/lons

My Lowrance 6500 coordinate system defaults out of the box to the degrees, minutes, seconds, and 10ths of a seconds (hell I am really not sure about this either). Input is XX XX XXXN & XX XX XXXW.
I have a bunch of numbers that are XX XX.XXN & XXX XX.XXW. My
questions are:
How do I know what format these (and for that matter other points) are in?
Do I change the system format on the unit, input the #s, then change the unit back or do I leave the unit as is? Won't this change all the other waypoints already in the unit?
Is'nt there someway to convert any format to deg, mins, secs, & tenths so you can enter the waypoints into the default coordinate
system?
