Default Subwoofer Cone Distruction Issue

Went to the boat today and heard a bit of a rattle from my sub. Took the cover off and you can see what the deal is. I wanted to replace the Clarion with a JL anyways but couldn’t justify it before. Now I guess I have too

I obviously know there is a significant quality difference between Clarion and JL so I do not need to be schooled on that. My question comes from an issue I have now had with two Clarion marine subs and if this has ever been an issue with JL or other high end subs.

As the picture shows the cone on my Clarion sub has disintegrated, which is the second time this has happened. The first one came with the boat which needed TLC when I bought it. Figured it was partially due to neglect and/or Florida sun. Found a good deal on the same one to replace it with. A few years later same deal now. The boat is on Lake Michigan so it is only used six months out of the year. I have added back curtains so the sub is only partially or occasionally left in the elements. I did replace the weak Clarion amp with a JL amp last summer but not sure that would cause this.

Can I just write this up as weak material used on the Clarion sub? What I don’t want to do is fork over the money for a nice sub to have the same thing happen. Has anyone else experienced this before?

And I don’t care how I take the photos on my phone, they always post side ways!

Those and sony’s are prone to this. Materials use just simply go brittle. Couple of years and they fail. Between jl and WS you won’t have the issue. Just don’t use extremely harsh chemicals to clean them. Also remember thing like shiny protectant sprays can deteriorate rubber surrounds.

You can order repair kits for those. Inexpensive, easy to do yourself. Not sure they’re worth it though. Kit is like 25.00

thats god to know! I am not sure if it is really worth it. the sub is only about $100 new and now I know it will happen again. the sound quality is not great any ways. I would rather replace with a sub that will match well with the power capabilities of the amp. My main concern was making sure this will not happen with a JL or Wet Sounds or other higher end sub
