Default Which transducer

Happy New Year to you all. Needing a transducer for our new boat. Gonna have the 76xsv series. Fishing GOM, mostly bottom in under 200’ and trolling. Will make, hopefully, a couple of rig trips a year as well. I think by what I searched I need either a b175hw or b175m. Not sure obviously. Seeing good bottom is high priority for us. Needs to be able to see the bait/tuna in the column as well while fishing the rigs. I would love to get two transducers but as of now only one is budgeted. I’m pretty the 175m is the best all around but just want to hear it from people who know and or have experience with either or maybe a different one. Thanks in advance.

For bottom detail a narrower cone is preferred....and since you consider that a high priority.....but also need to see bait/tuna in the midwater...the B175M would be the better of the two units you have considered.

Later add a GT51- if possible..that will give you good bottom/structure detail.

Or even start with a GT51.

Is there a better transducer than the above mentioned that does the stuff I am asking? I only inquire to so I can make the best decision possible. I am far from a sonar guru, but would like to have the best of what I can put in there. Thanks for spending as much time as you do helping all of us out Sir.

Agree with Sermperfi- Go GT51M if you can still get one.

you have dual channel chirp with 76 series so you could run two. But if I only had to do one, it would be the medium in your case.

Agreed on M. put the M in fixed frequency mode at the highest available frequency when bottom fishing to narrow up the cone. Run full M chirp when trolling.

I’m also fishing in the GOM with same needs. I currently have the LSS-2 Structure scan which is awesome for finding structure up to 200ft and I had installed the B175HW, but now looking to switch to the B175M. I don’t go to the rigs as much as anticipated and with the wide cone even fishing in 200-300ft of water your cone diameter is 100+ ft at that depth which doesn’t make it easy on you when figuring out where the fish are in relation to your drift direction.

Just my 2 cents I would go B175M and do the fixed frequencies as was stated before for wider cone angle trollin.

I think the B175HW would crush it for trolling, and general fishing in that area. If you want to target a specific area on the bottom it's going to be a little wide @ 25 degrees for it. You will mark the bait and gamefish but in 200' it will be tough to narrow down exactly where to bottom fish. Here is a screenshot of the B175M in shallow water. It's striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay. It marks great, it just doesn't cover the same amount of water the High-Wide does.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Great info and looks like the M is the sure bet.

Will the B175M mark fish out to 800ft?

Frigate8 it will mark the bottom easily at 800ft. I don't know how much fish you would mark past 5-600'. A low frequency would be my first choice for bottom fishing in 800'.

I have the B175M / Simrad S2009 combo and it marks fish at 800ft depth
