Default Making coral reef maps - advice needed with chartplotters

Hi,
I work in a marine research NGO. We need to map the coral reefs around a Marine Protected Area so we can monitor the current state and the changes happening in the reef, so we would need to be able to use the maps in a computer.
Could you advice us on what chartplotter/brand/system does this better? I have seen some are quite high resolution and also some can do a 3D map but there are many options and we cannot decide. Budget is low so price is an important aspect.
Thank you very much!

If you just want to map depth contours and see that on a gps, any mfg. has that option and that is easy as long as you are willing to share your data with the mfg and I think all of the mfg do that. If you just need to mark waypoints on a reef and see it on a pc that is also easy. So it depends on what kind of map you want to make and with what kind of features and detail. Without clearly understanding that and what you are trying to accomplish it is not possible to answer your question. If you want to create some other kind of marine map with other features besides depths or just waypoints marking things that is an entirely different endeavor and not something that is easy to do if you have no experience with it.

Most current Garmin units had the QuickDraw feature.....you might want ot look into that as it will give you 1' bottom contours .

Probably too far out of your price range but Olex is very good. http://www.olex.no/olexsoftware_e.html
We use it for bottom mapping commercial fishing. Love the 3D feature after we’ve mapped an area.

Do you want professional and accurate or a boaters toy? Are you using any third party software like HyPak.
I would suggest contacting the fisheries division of companies like Simrad Fisheries (Kongsberg) or Furuno.
