Default Quality Box Speakers?

A good buddy of mine has tasked me with putting together a nice sound system for his new house boat. I've got most everything figured out, except down below he wants some speakers and they have to be surface mounted. They'll be "inside", but the way he will use the boat and how it is designed means that "inside" and "outside" are almost one and the same.
I can't say that I've dealt with box speakers much in all my years and I'm somewhat surprised at the dearth of quality stuff out there. I'd like them to be marine/outdoor rated for obvious reasons and I'm limited to things like basic Fusion, Polyplaner, MTX, Pyle, and so forth. Not exactly brands I'd normally ever turn to. I feel like Fusion might be best option here, but I truly don't know.
Anyone have any experience with nice sounding, quality box speakers?
