Default Radar on 8" MFD

Is an 8" screen of sufficient size to run charting with radar overlay? I haven't dealt with anything under 12", so I have no clue what it would look like on an 8" screen. They want to stick with a single screen, and it's of course 8".

Anyone running such a setup?

Coming from a 12" screen I would say you may not be thrilled with the screen size of an 8". For running just one page without splitting the screen an 8" will work, but its all kind of relevant to what you are looking for or have become accustomed to. Usually the best guide line is the biggest screen you can fit and afford is your best option. It's like TV sizes. You never really hear anyone say "I wish my TV was smaller". This is the best G rated reference I can think of but hopefully it gets the point across.

Typically 8" isnt bad because all the 8" screens are not typically wide screen format and have enough height. Most 7" screens are wide screen format and too small for radar.

I would be more worried about having to run radar overlay than using a 8" screen for radar. 8" for radar works fine, but radar overlay gives a cluttered screen difficult to read.

I agree. When you need radar you don’t want all the chart info, tracks, etc. cluttering your radar returns. I think it’s always best to run a separate screen

I was on a boat the other night that had new Furuno equipment, including their new digital open array, and the radar overlay on the chart was amazing. As sometimes occurs, the location of markers on the map isn't accurate, but the radar clearly picked up the markers, so you have a cross-check of mapping and radar. Zoomed in, having a known track/route, mapping and radar, I think you could have run the boat with an IFR hood on! I was quite impressed.

Unfortunately, I neglected to ask specifics. Evidently it was installed in the last month or two if that helps. I'm reasonably sure he mentioned the display was a TZT, but he just said the open array was "digital." I believe it was a 4' 12KW antenna. But I'll say it again, the radar performance along with the overlay was spectacular.
