Mixing MFD Brands in Console

Anyone running MFD's from different manufacturers, side by side in a flush mount for example, to take advantage of unique features or technology strengths so you have the best of everything?

People certainly do this, but it is far less common than it was years ago. I think most people nowadays stick with a single platform. It makes sense for redundancy and ease of use.

What products were you thinking?

Simrad NSS8 and a Garmin 840xs.

Charts on the NSS and Sounder on the Garmin is my take.

The old NSS8 was a pretty good unit. I think the sounder was its strong point. Once you put a 840xs next to a NSS8 I think you'll be wanting to swap the NSS8 for another 840XS. The 840xs is brighter, faster, has better charts, and a better sonar. If only one unit is in the budget then I think they could be complimentary. I would use the 840xs as the sonar. Both units will act as chartplotters. So when you want two screens use the nss as the gps and the 840 as the sonar. When coming and going (navigating) you can always use the better chartplotter on the 840.

What transducer do you have now?

also keep in mind that what you're proposing is not only 2 different brands but two different input types (buttons vs touch). I once had this type of arrangement and I was always touching the button unit's screen when trying to adjust it. it's a pain to go back & forth from touch to buttons. if all your mfd's are button then it's not nearly as bad.

If you're good w/the button interface then I would agree w/Jim...bite the bullet and get the 2 840xs. the nss8 still has value so with the super low cost of the 840xs you're net cost won't be too bad.

With 2 of the same brand much easier to share info.....and then you can use the same transducer image on both screens..and also have redundancy.

Thanks everyone...I have an Airmar shoot-through transducer, but don't recall the model number...

I actually love the charting on my NSS8 using the Navionics Platinum Plus charts. I actually bought a second NSS8 when Defender was closing them out, but decided for my use it was totally unnecessary to have two MFD's, particularly when I can use my iPhone with Navionics as a back-up.

The price of the 840xs just seemed appealing...Decisions, decisions...

If you plan to use your current transducer NSS8 will be better than 840xs as sonar. Unless you buy a CHIRP transducer you won't utilize of the 840xs sonar advantages over NSS8.

You will miss the hybrid touch and button interface, especially the rotary knob, if you replace NSS8.

You can get a B&G Zeus2 9 for $839 at Defender. This is a NSS9 Evo2 without integrated sonar module and with additional sailing functionality.

Garmin and Simrad

I just bought a new boat that came with a 7" Evo3 Simrad with an SS60 thru-hull tranducer. I had already bought a Garmin 1242xvs that I installed next to the Simrad. I'm thinking about moving the SS60 to the Garmin, splitting the screen and running Garmin maps/sonar on it, Navionic maps on the Simrad. I also have a transom mount GT51M-TM that I probably won't end up installing now. Point is, I do have two different systems, but only because I gained a Simrad unexpectedly!☺
