Default 840XS v. GO7 XSE - thoughts?

I see BOE has a decent deal on the 840XS...any thoughts on how this box compares to the GO7 XSE with Totalscan?

Pretty sure I'd lose the sidescan....I would pick up a GPS plotter that actually lets you "autoroute".

Do you prefer buttons or touchscreen? This will be a major difference as well. You can add sidescan to the 840xs but you will need to add a GCV10 with a GT30 transducer. This will give you down and side imaging while another traditional transducer can be added for Chirp sonar. I like the button layout a lot on the 840xs. One of these units has been installed on my boat for a few years now and it is a tank. In my opinion these units are worth every penny. I am even thinking of putting one on the kayaks and jon boat. If I had better balance I'd put on on the paddle board as well.

With GO XSE autorouting can be done in the Navionics app and transferred by WiFi to GO XSE.

The screen is a lot larger on the 840 but no sidescan. Autorouting is a nice feature but required a $300 G2 Vision card. The button interface is well done on the Garmin but its not as speedy to use a directional pad vs touchscreen. If you have a smaller rough riding boat you may prefer the buttons while underway, but touch is undoubtedly more intuitive and quicker. It is a tough decision based on features but depending on how much the sidescan matters to you, i think the biggest difference is the screen size which is about 30% larger on the 840.

Not straight out of the box.

You still need to buy a vessel view link kit...... Which allows any n2k compatible display have access to the engine data, but yes, the simrad has preloaded settings for Mercury engines.

I"m old school...OX66....so no engine data. I do have an N2K VHF but that should hook up without issue.

Autorouting via Navionics app is a pain....I can set the routes in the phone and sync the phone to the GO7 but when I go into Files they aren't there. It might be user error or maybe it's just not working.

A bigger screen would be nice....I don't use sidescan all that much so could likely live without it.

The biggest draw is the price....although I also found a 74DV with CHIRP in the bargain room at Cabelas for $379. Needs a $22 power cord but I'm contemplating that as well. I'll need a $100 ducer either way I guess.

The 840xs has many advantages over the 74dv.
It is networkable..
It has Wifi
1kw
NMEA 2000
radar capable
etc.

You just answered your original question,840xs all the way.BTW,I don't know where you will be fishing or the depth you'll be fishing but don't just throw some $100 ducer on there.IMO that's the most important part.Go big or go home. All of the people who have responded here are very knowledgeable,I personally went with SemperFi.Answered all of my questions even the dumb ones

The $100 ducer looks to be about $165. And then there is the $300 Vision Card.....Oy.....
