Default New Epirb (West Marine Deal?)

I have recently started looking to purchase a Epirb for winter fishing and I ran across this offer at West Marine and am wondering if this is a good deal or not. There is a rebate offer that makes this very tempting. The rebate is for a free ResQLink Personal Locator Beacon which seems like a pretty good deal to me since the PLB is going for $244 on West Marine's site.

Also, do you guys recommend a manual or auto deploy Epirb? Pro's & Con's? Any other brands to consider?

I think my buddy waited something like five months for his free PLB....might even been longer. As you can imagine he wasn't pleased since he bought the EPIB in like March.

Can't comment on the deal, but the title of your post says EPIRB and the content is PLB.

A PLB is not an EPIRB. Each has it's own place in the pantheon of safety/survival equipment, but they should not be confused. Much different capabilities and limitations.

The entire question about auto or manual deploy does not apply to PLBs.

Finally, the link you provided is for an $800 EPIRB, not a $244 PLB.

Yes, I am looking to purchase a new EPIRB, just like it says in the title. The link is for the EPIRB that I am looking to buy and there is a rebate for a free PLB if I buy the $759 EPIRB which I also stated.

Sorry for the confusion, I think!

Thats not really that good of a deal.

Id look at this: Ocean Signal

and this: ResQlink

Hit their 15% off Black Friday sale and together they would be about $550.

Seems to me like a $255 dollar savings for essentially the same stuff.

So, I was doing some digging and it looks like the rebate offered is not specific to West Marine and ACR has a promotion site that allows you to download the rebate form. I thought it was West Marine specific since theirs is the only site I saw that promoted the rebate. Now I see that Defender has it too for the same price with the rebate.

Amazon has it for $706!
Semperfifishing, a THT vendor, just let me know that they have it for $659. I think I am going this route.

Posting this has just saved me $100!!!! Awesome!!

I plan to use the PLB in my kayak and when we travel.

That is an auto release (Cat 1) EPIRB and that is probably something you don't require for the type of boat you probably have? I don't believe that is a good deal for what you require

I don't know, I own a 25' Seafox and, according to the boat experts here on THT, it could sink out from under me at any second thanks to its thin fiberglass, hull flexing and cheap construction.

I think I need the best so they can locate my corpse when the boat explodes in a fiery ball of flames caused by the birds nest of faulty wiring under the helm station that was not through bolted.

Seriously, I was just looking at that model because you get the free PLB with that model.
