Default Solar trickle charger reading 13.5+ volts?

I have my boat battery on a 15w battery tender solar panel which acts as a trickle charger. It says it protects against overcharging (I assume it shuts off at X volts). I dont remember the exact reading but I think when I checked it today it was around 13.5 or more, is this normal for a trickle charger of am I going to ruin my battery overtime?

sounds right; voltage for a constant "float" charge is considered to be ~ 13.5 - 13.8

I have found you really need a controller, regardless of the marketing says...
