Default Garmin 1204 xhd to 1204 xhd2 or Fantom 4 swap out

Will probably be swapping out a currently defunct XHD (2nd time failed in 1.5 yrs) to a new XHD2 or Phantom 4 unit.

Any real world comparison by others who have made the 'switch'...??

May also drop the wattage from the 12kw to 6kw. Hope this will not materially impact the 3-6nm birding capabilities. The 1.8* of the array will still be the same.

I did find out the bolt footprint will be the same so no adapter will be needed.

Any input or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

You will absolutely see an impact on bird finding going from 12 to 6 KW while it may not be as noticeable at the closer ranges as you get to the outer ranges of your bird hunting that's where it's really going to show the difference. If you are looking for a radar for bird hunting I would not select the Fantom as the radar specifically for bird hunting. While the Fantom is a great radar for navigation and weather a 12 KW magnetron based radar will be better for birds at further distances

I agree that the outer limits of bird detection will be less with a 12 to 6 KW move. I was thinking that the XHD TO XHD2 upgrade in signal processing would be a compensating factor that may make the downgrade in power have less impact. Solid 3-5 mile 'bird' performance is what I am hoping to achieve.

From a health standpoint, the Famtom power reduction output is a key reason for its consideration. That plus this appears to be the evolutionary path forward for radar technology / refinement / improvements. I was hopeful that the 'bird' function or abilities would be reasonably intact.

If I had hands-on comparison, the choice would be more discernable.

I've had all the xHD2's and have settled on the Fantom 4. The Fantom is not for birding, it's a very nice situational awareness attribute. Gawd, it's good.

So you don't use it for birding, or you tried it for birding and it yielded terrible / waste of time results and could not paint a bird(s) at all..??

I get that at the present time, a 12-25k maggy systems win. Just trying to discern the comparative performance. My old 12k XHD 4' open was excellent at painting birds at distance but to me the downside was having 12,000watt pulses shooting out just 18-24" above head level.

Current ill effects are not detectable; long term effects are potentially troublesome in my view. Giving up some range is a compromise I am considering. Just trying to quantify potential performance loss.

Thank you for your response.

Ethan, what do you mean by his? New ride will have the xhd, which we had on our old boat (and also had problems with). Wondering whats "so" special and advanced?
