Default Furuno FR8252 25kw radar questions

Looking for a captain that has experience with this radar. In the past I have not been able to find anyone that has this particular radar model. Although it works pretty well its definitely has a lot of functions that I have a few questions on. One question is do you have it setup to manually or auto? Do you have it setup so its manual on all custom settings such as harbor, sea, birds, etc? Or do you have some setup as auto and some manual? thx

It's been a few years but I did have quite a bit of time running a boat with that radar unit. My recollection was that the auto modes worked quite well for most conditions and so you could set it to auto gain and auto sea state and get a very good picture. Furuno knows their stuff when it comes to programming the software that controls the auto modes on radar unlike some other companies.

One thing to note is that when running in an area with lots of traffic where you might not use a range more than 2 miles, you will want to set the rotation speed to high so it refreshes faster.

I do recall tuning manually for tracking birds, which it does beautifully. For that you follow the usual drill of turning off the sea state and rain filters and tuning the gain up manually until you cover the screen with speckles and then backing off a bit, just enough to make the targets show through the speckles. Also use echo trails set at a short interval such as 15 seconds.

The best advice is to play around a lot on clear days when you have visual confirmation of what the radar is showing you and can see the effect of the various settings.

Thanks for the response. One question I have is can you have it setup on manual and auto per custom settings (harbor, sea, bird). Or once radar is setup its on one or the other? When using harbor the rotation speed is set to 48rpm instead of 24. Skip

If I remember you can create your own custom combinations of settings that get stored and can be recalled. Not sure what you mean by "once radar is setup." If you mean while in operation, you choose one of your preset custom modes, you will get that package of settings. If you don't use one of those, you will have the option of setting gain, sea clutter, and rain filters as you wish. For example, you could have auto gain turned on and manual sea clutter. Doesn't have to be all manual or all auto.

Hope that helps.
