Default How will Garmin purchase of Navionics affect other brands?

I was very close to ordering a G09XSE because I wanted the Navionics mapware then I see this. Does anyone think that Garmin will screw around with this and not make the navi maps available to the other companies, eg. if you want the Navionics maps you need to buy Garmin hardware?? I see lots of potential for BS with this deal.

Yet to be seen ... let's face it Navionics was not the best run company to start with so when Garmin came calling they took their profit an ran. Time will tell.

Garmin parted company with navionics years ago and if you ask me their charts stink. Hopefully this will help improve them, after all my Android phone has better charts then my garmin!!

Hopefully my phone doesn't downgrade, and my 741 upgrades!

Garmin will not be allowing a Navionics card to be put in a Garmin unit, however, their intent is to merge Navionics data in to their LakeVu and Blue Chart map programs. In the areas where Garmin's coverage is weak, they will add the Navionics data to fill those gaps. There will be updates to mapping that will be announced 2 times a year as they have done in the past. The updates will indicate what lakes have been modified.

Navionics will continue to operate as an independent company selling and supporting their products to all other manufacturers like Lowrance / Humminbird / Raymarine etc. This only makes sense as that is where their money is made. In addition, the Active Captain software will eventually be compatible with apple products. They are just waiting on the release. No date was given.

As mentioned in a previous post, the echoMap CHIRP Plus series will have unit to unit networking to share user and sonar data some time in early 2018.. If you run PanOptix now , you will need the port expander if you have more than 2 devices to network.

That's good info, thanks. I think I will go ahead with the GO7 purchase and I will check out your website.

That source may be a little dated, since Jeff Siegel posted in another forum this AM, that Garmin Active Captain was available for Apple IOS today. I downloaded it this AM. (It was hung up with some Apple developer approval.) I have not been able to use it on the Garmin chart plotters, but the word is that it is being as retroactive as possible; any limitations were hardware in the older units. One member used the new app, which recognized his 741xs, recognized the maps installed and allow him to download them over the web to the app for detailed maps within the active captain map screen. There was no ability to sync waypoints/routes, do software updates, and smart notifications from the app to plotter.
It looks like our units are one generation behind the curve for full functionality."

There is a list of fully compatible chart plotters on the Garmin Site. Older plotters are partly compatible--and that has been confirmed.

This is a bit disappointing, because I am not going to shell out another 3 K to update chart plotters, which are about a year old! The app does take the place of the old "helm" and also the "Garmin Blue Charts" (if you can upload the maps). I have a little trouble understanding if the 1041xs, 741 xs will communicate, why they cannot do all of the other features, with software updates...But the 1042xsv and 742xsv will work with the new app...

7610xsv is listed as supported my active captain but not my 7616xsv. That's basically impossible for me to comprehend.
