Default Installing EP-85R with Lowrance HDS Gen 3 and Etec G2 300hp

Hi guys,

I have a Lowrance HDS Gen 3 unit and a Etec G2 300 hp motor. I want the HDS Gen 3 to be able to calculate fuel flow because my Icon 3.5 CS has no way of showing this data or storing it. In fact the fuel level calibration is very bad on this touch screen.

It appears I need a EP-85R Module to store data and connect this to the NMEA network. Then my Lowrance should be able to make the calcs.

Any tips or suggestions if this is the proper way and if there is a specific area to mount to in the NMEA network.

The Lowrance EP-85R Data Storage Module is obsolete. It has been replaced by a similar device to perform the same functions, now called the Lowrance FUEL DATA MANAGER.

You can connect the FUEL DATA MANAGER at any convenient location in the NMEA-2000 network backbone.

And, yes, if you want to show FUEL USED data on a Lowrance HDS display, you need to have the FUEL DATA MANAGER on the network, as that added module will be doing all the work; the display just shows the calculated amounts of fuel stored in the module.

The EP-85R had a rather bad reputation for flaky behavior. There were several firmware revisions, and some made it work better and others made it work worse or not at all. I presume--and hope--that the new device, the FUEL DATA MANAGER, has worked out all the earlier problems and will provide a useful and stable function.

---IMPORTANT---

Please understand that the FUEL DATA MANAGER and the earlier EP-85R have no part in and play no role in showing you any data about RATE OF FUEL FLOW. If you want to see just the rate of fuel flow on a Lowrance HDS display, you DO NOT need any add-on module. The ENGINE sends that data to the network, and the HDS can show it.

The purpose of the FUEL DATA MANAGER is to accumulate and store data about VOLUME of fuel consumed or VOLUME of fuel remaining in a fuel tank or to impute FUEL TANK LEVEL by an indirect method.

Also be aware than only Lowrance devices can retrieve the data from the FUEL DATA MANAGER, and they will be the only devices that can display the data.

Great info! Very detailed thank you.

Yes I am looking for a better way to track VOLUME in tank so I know how much fuel is left or how much was consumed. My ICON shows my MPG rate. But my fuel sender level is sketchy at best and it would be nice to have a more accurate or backup way of measuring fuel remaining.
