Default Best chart/topography card for the Simrad SO 7

Have the Insight card installed and I have to admit it's less than impressive. I'm in the NE right outside the NY Hudson River into Raritan Bay and coastal Atlantic. The Navionics app on the phone is 1000% more detailed than the base unit, and it's driving me nuts. Probably answering my own question but could use feedback before I pull the trigger on another micro sd.

Thanks

Get a Navionics+ card and it will show the same as the app.

Hey, I just bought a new SO7 and a Fishing Hotspot chip. What do I do to access the chip?

Yessir, bee running the plat+ charts in my units for quite a while now. It's the full package for me. The plat+ gives me the navigational charts, sonar charts(1ft contours), 3D views, Satellite Imagery Overlay, advanced map options like auto routing, etc... Since you already have the app as well, you can make use of the plotter sync as well. Sync your waypoints, tracks, routes, update your charts.....

A few exceptions but it seems based on the plethora of the posted complaints over the years most of the FL inshore crowd is not impressed with any of the navionics charts or images. Most of the fans run larger deeper drafting rigs that run in major basins and deeper water. That is why all of the posted screen shots are deeper areas at inlets and major passes and channels and they focus on depth contours in those areas. The shortcomings of plat + are not noted by this group of boaters who have little to no idea how their map actually stacks up running in so many areas that they can't run their boats. There was some recent improvements to photos on the plat+ but nothing substantive. Screen shots of Plat + do not emphasize images because they are mostly useful only for showing land masses. So if you are not impressed with your Navionics now, you are unlikely to be impressed with the other version either. I have both. It's better than no chip but nothing you can navigate with well in unfamiliar shallower areas outside of main marked channels. And you can't use the pictures to scout new areas to fish with much insight because of their lack of color, detail and resolution. The map is not up to date with the latest ENP rules and new running corridors/ poll only areas and it is also missing 100s of navigation markers, signs and posts not controlled by NOAA. For your area, if you are running the ICW on east coast to NFL and SFL, you can get much better than Plat+ in terms of detail, accuracy, and particularly imagery. Boaters have fewer options in the NE portion of the country and in the Caribbean so the p+ is about the best they can hope for there. If you want some actual screen shots of your area of plat + and a better option for your area IM me and I can text them to you so you may judge for yourself.

This is one of the areas I'd like to improve on mapping. Keeping them up to date is important as well. I always run my prior tracking at night, but you would be surprised how many people will rely solely on their outdated charts. The "tip" of Sandy Hook has pushed into Raritan Bay 200 yards from where most charts 5 years or more show. Once Striped Bass fishing gets going and people leave in darkness for the twilight bite...they beach themselves at 35kts. Not pretty.

There is also an area marked Roamers Shoal that has 40-60' channels on either side with 5' bar up the middle. Add a couple tankers and a 3kt outgoing against a 20mph East breeze. Yeah buddy!
