Default N2K upgrade to display engine data in MFD

Looking to upgrade to a new chartplotter/MFD ($1000 range) ....before deciding on a model (Garmin, Raymarine, etc) I'd like to know if I can display engine data on it.

Boat currently has an orignal smartcraft gauge that provides engine data, etc, so I'm wondering if I can connect an aftermarket unit to this data flow from the engine.

Since boat already has an smartcraft gauge, I assume there is at least one NMEA2000 compatible interface at the instrument panel...so what adapter/bus expander do I typically need to add a new compatible MDF?...I don't want to lose the original smartcraft gauge.

2004 Sundancer 260, single Mercury 350 MPI engine.

Not sure about engine data, but I've recently gotten a Garmin 942xs and it's a great unit. Not too small and plenty bright. I'd read up on the Garmin website with your specific setup.

By incorporating the new MFD to the SmartCraft what were you looking to gain?. You will for the most part just be regurgitating the data that the SmartCraft already shows and will be consuming valuable screen space in the process.

I'm getting a chartplotter anyway, this is an additional feature I'd like to have. I prefer to click once and have all the data in front of me on a 10 inch screen vs having to cycle through 10 button clicks on a tiny display while behind the helm...it just looks unsafe to me.

Don't worry guys, I think I've got this....not rocket science after all...posting in case another THT user can benefit from the info:

I'm getting a new Mercmonitor digital gauge...these come already with a N2K interface, and cost is similar to just getting an NMEA gateway: I get a new gauge ( replaces my Sc1000) plus what I need to get the engine data to the chartplotter.

I think I will also interface a new N2K VHF (relay SOS position info from chartplotter) so I just need to add the junction box on the smartcraft side (to connect cable from engine), and an extra resistor T adapter for N2K side so I can connect two N2K devices...bingo!.
