Default Help Choosing Garmin AP

I'm getting some conflicting information from Garmin's tech support line and was hoping for some help on the forum.

I was hoping to simply install the less expensive Core Pack without a pump since my current Furuno pump is working just fine.

1) Do I need an outboard mounted rudder reference unit if I install the Garmin GHP core pack and reuse my existing Furuno pump? Is virtual rudder feedback possible with this set up?

2) What is involved if I decide to upgrade to the Smart Pump in the future? In addition to the new pulp, someone at Garmin stated I needed to replace the AP computer but another tech told me I would just need to update the software.

Thank you very much.

I think I was able to answer question #2.

I'm still trying to understand if a rudder reference unit is required if I use a 3rd party pump. I like the idea of a virtual feedback system.

Thank you

The Garmin GHP Reactor™ Mechanical/Retrofit/Solenoid Corepack
PART NUMBER: 010-00705-45 will NOT operate without a rudder feedback sensor ( NO virtual feedback option on that system configuration)

Converting a GHP Reactor™ Mechanical/Retrofit/Solenoid Corepack
PART NUMBER: 010-00705-45 to use a Garmin pump will require the replacement of almost all cables and hardware except for the display ( probably not cost effective)
