Default What GPS ~$700

Looking for a semi-simple GPS/Chartplotter to flush mount on my 21 Scout. Looking at both the Simrad GO7 or the Garmin 74. Any pro's and con's to these two? Or any others I should be looking at?

Maybe a little more than your budget, I bought a C97 for about $700, deal no longer available, refurbished and I am very happy with it. Got a 3 year warranty on it from Raymarine

I did, great price but I need a transducer, and that would put me over budget.

just a little over depending on what ducer you go with. A gt23 would only put you over by a little bit and it iwould be an awesome set up.

Keep in mind the 741xs is a older model at end of life. This means that support will be minimized moving forward. Great unit in it's day.

I'm a Garmin man and I have owned a 74sv. I highly recommend it. Very user friendly. Sidescan is great for finding offshore wrecks. Preloaded bluechart g2 maps work great in my area have almost all public reefs. GT51 is a great transducer. (If they did not switch over to the gt52 now, not sure). Chirp sonar has very good detail in target separation. It shows individual fish in schools clearly.

Have no experience with the Simrad but I will never have a touchscreen on a bay boat. I got stuck in a very bad storm a month ago. I had to plug my homeport into my garmin to get back to the launch since i could not see 20 yards through the rain. There is no way I could have done that on a touch screen in a down pour. Plus I can't imagine how hard it would be to see the screen in the sun with all the smudges from using it with "dirty" fingers. Obviously many people like touchscreens since they sell so many. I just think they are better suited for a very large center console with a t top or a cuddy. To each his own...

After that storm I decided to buy Sirius XM weather. The garmin was not compatible so I sold it and bought a 1042xsv. If you ever want XM weather you may want to consider another unit.

Here's a pic of mine flush mounted...

I saw that, it looks like it ends on the 4th however.

Can you flush mount the GO7 without a flush mount kit? And I read the sunscreen won't work if you flush mount?

If you read about "what's in the box" you will see that is comes with panel mount gasket and screws, just like the Garmins. In short, yes.

What’s in the Box

GO XSE
Sun cover
Panel mount gasket
Caps (2x, on NMEA 2000 and Sonar connectors). The GO9 XSE has an additional cap for the Radar connector.
Fuse holder (ATC blade)
Fuse (3 amp)
Power cable
Panel mount screws (4x #10 x 1/2" PN HD SS)
U Bracket mount screws (4x #10 x 3/4" PN HD SS)
U Bracket
Bracket knobs (2x)
Documentation pack
Transducer and mounting bracket

I did read that, but I keep reading about people buying flush mount kits for the GO7 and that the included sun cover won't fit if flush mounted.

I believe you might be reading about "flush mounting" vs "panel mounting". Flush mounting requires a kit and the cover won't fit, where panel mounting you don't need anything else. I believe.

Ahh it looks like you are absolutely correct. The panel mount just sticks out further I guess? Still doesn't look bad.

Surface vs flush. Surface sticks out approx 3/4 inch, flush sits about 3/16 in the Go7 installation
