Default Garmin fantom radar 24" dome reviews

Looking at the GMR 24 Fantom. Garmin advertises it wil locate birds. Is anyone using this or the GMR 18 to find birds? How do you like the overall performance? Stuck with a dome due to a pesky bridge I need to go under.

I just had the 24 fantom installed. So far I am very happy with it. Everything I have read says the domes aren't really worth a shit when it comes to looking for birds, although I have not tried to do that. I got it primarily for navigation and weather and the low power draw, as well as instant on.

I like the fact they're solid state, let me know once you get a few hours of use if you can see the birds.
Appreciate it

Interested in any opinions on the Fantom vs the xHD dome. I also only want it for navigation and care more about resolution and sensitivity than seeing birds over baitfish.

Lower power draw and instant on are nice but more important to me is spotting a channel marker or small boat in the dark or more important in a heavy rainstorm.

Have heard a couple of opinions that the Fantom is Garmin's first generation digital and not as good as the xHD.

I had to get a dome to fit under my tower and I went with a 24" Fantom
For navigation and collision avoidance, I am very happy with it
As mentioned, instant on & low power draw are a plus
The doppler is great, when you see a red target, it jumps out at you

I've tried looking for birds but to me, it only looks like noise. Could be me, could be the machine, probably both

I had to return the original dome because of a bumping/grinding noise it made.
The RMA was issued with no questions asked (I made a recording of the noise and emailed it to them). The replacement is fine

To me the most important range is the nearest mile or two and this one delivers

Target separation is OK, not great. At a mile or two out, bouys at my inlet that are 300' apart appear as one target. They separate as you get under a mile

Price point was good

Hope this helps

Detecting birds with a dome will take practice and tuning.

I'm hearing mixed reviews on the Fantom in general whether it's open array or dome. I'm not in a hurry to buy so let's see what the hull truth is
