Default Electronics Recommendation

About to move up to a Capehorn 31T and wanted to get some help on which electronic set up to go with. We fish out of Galveston/Freeport Texas and do a lot of deep dropping. I plan on getting a 2kw transducer, but really not sure whether to go with Garmin or Simrad. Any input would be appreciated.

What gear have you had in the past? Are you a button or touch kind of guy?

I have a 7212 with a Airmar B164 1kw and GSD 24 on our 24os capehorn currently. I would like to stick with touch screen.

You can stay with the 7212 and add the GSD-26 and a 2 kw CHIRP ducer..

We are getting a new boat (31T) and I just wanted to get recommendations on what to go with. Have not ruled out Furuno but know nothing about that.

The S5100 sounder is excellent, combine this with NSS12 Evo3 or NSS16 Evo3. On a 31' boat a 4' Halo radar would be nice.

I think you would be very impressed with the NSS Evo3 screens loaded with a Navionics chart for that area. For the 2kw sounder you will want an S5100 sounder module and for deep dropping probably a Low/High Chirp transducer such as the Airmar R109LH. The 7600 series units would be a good option also with the GSD26 sounder.

How deep does sounder read to? I am getting into the swordfish game also. I want to be able to see these beasts 2000ft down.

Depth is relative to conditions of the water. The S5100 or GSD26 or Furuno will do it

I am leaning heavily towards Simrad for the specific reason that the CMOR chip is not going to be compatible with Garmin. Never worked with Simrad so wondering how complicated it is compared to Garmin. Also what set up I should go with assuming I go Simrad.

The Evo 3 MFDS and the S5100 sounder module is the way to go.

Can you shed some light on the difference between the 12 inch screen with broadband radar and without? 1500 price difference. Also what transducer do you recommend. I want 2kw chirp if possible or at least high low 1kw chirp.

That's the bundle, the units are all radar capable. The R109 transducer.

I've have Evo2 with 4G radar for 2 years now and I'm very happy with it.

The Simrad systems have come a long way with their user friendliness in my opinion. These displays are pretty straight forward to use and adjust once you get the hang of their system and software. There is always a little bit of a learning curve switching brands of electronics, but I would be confident to say if you can use a smartphone without trouble then the Simrad screen will be a breeze. For your setup regarding the sonar side of things I would highly recommend the S5100 sounder module with the R109LH for a 2kw output transducer.

As far as the rest of the package goes a 4G radar would be a safe bet unless you were looking more into and open array. Autopilot would be up pretty high on the list of recommendations as well. and the AP44 would be a great fit for this setup. Depending on steering capacities your probably looking at an AP44 high capacity pack.

For the smaller add-on parts I would suggest a WM-3 weather module first and then maybe an AIS compatible VHF such as the RS35. If you have any questions with anything through the mind twisting process of selecting electronics give me a call or shoot me an email. We can walk you through the do's and don'ts and everything in between.
